HDD on bay 4 replaced but says "empty"

Post by jqsecofr »

Hello team!
First to all, I already perform a search into this BIG page/database and found some similar cases but not the same.
HW: QNAP TS 431P with 4 disks Seagate Ironwolf 4TB, with FMW 5.1.0.2348 and qfinder pro 7.8.4
Comment: really sorry for my english, is not very good.

My name is Javier, I am from Argentina, I have this HW since 3 years ago... the problem is that 3 weeks ago, I started my qnap and the first light was in red "blinking"... ops, OK... cheking the page host:8080 i see that 4th bay says something like "raid degraded, replace..." ok, i removed and plug the disk, restarted, etc.. but same condition.
Well... I purchased a new 4TB Seagate Ironwolf, i replaced the disk on error with the new one, I started the qnap, the applications perform a lots of checks, all disks in GREEN status, perform a "rebuild" raid, and after several minutes doing "checks" I think? the 4th bay moves to "empty" status...

The only "good new" is that the red light blinking didnt appear again but, I unplug the 4hdd, plug it again... perform several checks with 4 bays in "green" status and after several minutos... empty bay.

I cannot take screenshot of the current situation bacause I cannot login... I will try to restart again the device...

Any comment/idea?

Thank you!

Always hot swap disks .. you shut the NAS down to swap the defective disk .. don't do that

How is you backup situation ? (ALWAYS have backups .. a RAID is NOT a backup)

Hello Dolbyman, nope, I replaced the failed disk with the nas ON... Thanks GOD i found a web page explaining that the default password is the mac address without the : so, I loged now... I see all disks in "green" status but status of the 4 disks is "degraded"... like the raid was not re-created or something like that?

After ten minutes started "ok" and green status for the disks, the nas started "bip bip bip"... and I see two HW errors:
[Hardware status]: Failed to access the installed drive. Check the host: 3,5" SATA 4 for errors.
[Hardware status] "Host: 3,5" SATA HDD 4 Disconnected"..

So... it is like the disks are ok and the issue is in the bay number 4... or I am wrong? Because the disk is NEW...

That sounded differently .. but that could be just your English

Anyways

Can you log into the NAS and do a

Code: Select all

md_checker
And post the results back in code tags

Absolutely my mistake in the explanation, the "failed" disk was not in the qnap, I received the new one today, just plug that one and see the situation... but no lucky, that is why I am restarting the qnap and see what happen...

Concerning the command, you mean to run the "md_checker" using putty?

Thank you

And that is the why of the disk in error....

I am removing all the data... maybe some deeply reset or something like that?

possible that more than one drive is busted ...so a rebuild wouldn't work

we just had a case like this a few days ago

And beside of the disk error: FW 5.1.0.2248 is a public beta, are you aware of this?
If the NAS is not for testing but holds important data, backups are hopefully existing when using such a beta firmware?

ops... I removed all the data... so, you think that a reset with initialize system is not enough right.. ??

I do not know how to paste images here but, 30 minutes before to open this case, I saw all the bays in green and disks in "OK" status... it is like after that, something happen and the bay turns "empty"... :(
