Hy,
So my issue is the following. I have a TS-653D equipped with 6x 8TB drives. My question would be the following. can I remove 5 of those 8TB drives, create a RAID 6 while using the existing "empty" drive bay to read each HDD, copy its content over to the raid and when all the files are copied equip the final drive bay with another 20TB drive and expand the existing RAID so the RAID 6 will utilize all drives?
Replace Static volumes with bigger drives and create a RAID

Sounds like you have no backups..even a raid is no backup
- Get a backup space large enough for all your files
- Kill the NAS drives
- Start the NAS from scratch and restore from backups
- Use the new backup space for regular backups

I do have a offsite backup and that wasn´t my question. As mentioned above I want to replace the drives using the method above, that´s all I want to know.

Depends to the disk configuration. If all disks configured as single disk drives you can do that.
If they are member of a raid or pool, you cant remove a disk. In that case you need to start from scratch and restore your data.
But actually unclear: If you remove 5 out of 6 drives, your amount of data is less than 8TB? And all of this data is stored at a single disk?
Or how do get the idea that removing 5 from 6 drives makes data survive?

Also these units work with shares, removing the disks will result in errors (missing share targets) and IF the single reinsert would work, would make the need for recreating each share manually neccessary.
Hence going the way I described ...if you have full external backups then worst case is a long remote restore then.
I see OP is arguing on reddit about it as well

At least he describes his configuration at reddit.
Anyhow, I am still wondering how this should work: removing all except one drive and data is expected to stay persistent...?
Because of existing backups: try and report outcome.
