App loading problems - TS253 pro

Post by spon88 »

Hi,

I have a TS253 Pro with 2 WD Red 3TB drives set in a simple RAID 1 configuration. The system has been fine for around 8 months or so since set up and I've loaded the regular firmware updates as they've become available. The last update was to version 4.2.3 Build 20170121 a few days ago after which (coincidentally?) problems began. I use the NAS as a simple storage device and I do not have any real server management experience.

An update for Photostation appeared a few days ago but hung at 80% when I tried to load it. It shows loaded in the app section but will not open. Same issue when I unloaded and tried to reload it. I don't really use the app but I'm keen to have the system 100% working if possible. So I tried to raise a support ticket with QNAP but was surprised to find that the Helpdesk app would not open - saying "not found". I was able to unload the Help app, reload it and submit a ticket that way. However, on reboot, the Helpdesk app will not open again. Very odd. Also still no success with loading Photostation. I haven't had a response from QNAP support so far (nearly 3 days).

When Photostation hung, I got this error - however, I don't really know what to check for. Other apps on there, e.g. Plex and Video Station are all working fine:

Type Date Time Users Source IP Computer name Content

Error 2017/01/26 18:39:44 System 127.0.0.1 localhost [App Center] App Default volume is not available. Please go to "Storage Manager" to check volume status before installing apps.

Last night I tried to run the "check volume" utility and left it running, however this morning it was still stuck at 1%. So something wrong there too.

I don't have any additional volumes or anything like that set up as I just use the NAS for file storage as noted previously - so really just a "black box" for me to be honest.

Given no response from QNAP so far, I thought I'd try you guys here to see if you can steer me in the right direction please. I have other back-ups of my data elsewhere but I'd rather try and get the system working correctly again rather than re-setting and reloading all of my files. For what it's worth, I can still sync working files to the NAS and access all of that fine on my network. Just the app and error checking issues noted above. The real time diagnostic stuff (SMART) etc all seems clear.

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

Anyone got any thoughts on this please? 5 days in and no response from QNAP which is disappointing. What is the usual lead-time for official support please?

I'm clutching at straws here and I don't know much at all about how the system actually works, but is there a "config" files of sorts that dictates where various files are stored? It only seems to be apps where there is a problem (see error message in first post) - all other file storage is still working as expected. So has the "config" been slightly corrupted during the firmware update? If so, how do you check please? I'd rather check that first before doing a full re-set and start again.

Thanks

Hmm, sounds a bit of a mess.
Have a look at your qpkg.conf file, may be corrupt.
Use Putty and check the file or copy to public to read
"cp /etc/config/qpkg.conf /share/Public"

Or wait for support, and wait...

Thanks for replying.

This is where it gets scary for me as whilst I can probably load Putty and connect, I don't have any experience with the various commands needed to a) find that file and b) do anything with it. I see your instruction there but any chance of embellishing it to give a noob a chance please?

Thanks

copy "cp /etc/config/qpkg.conf /share/Public" without the quotes, then once logged into putty with your username/password, right click your mouse and it will paste to command line, then press enter, then look in public folder and open qpkg.conf and see what it says

Maybe someone else has suggestion on removing an app that's corrupt.

Ok thanks for that. May not be this evening but as soon as I can get an hour or so to take a look.

I've collated all my current NAS data on separate drives ready for if I have to go for a complete nuke and re-install. Is that just a case of pressing the reset for 10 seconds and following the basic set up procedure please? I believe it takes you back to scratch and I may ultimately choose that route if it's borked beyond recovery. I'll see what I can find and also give support a couple more days before hitting the button. Pain in the a$$ :(

Hi, OK I have the following - however, nothing there related to Photostation as far as my inexperienced eye can tell? Is there a general config file somewhere which tells the NAS where to load apps please? Sorry if that sounds daft! I don't see anything in there which shouldn't be posted publicly but please let me know if there is. Thanks.

The /share/CE_CACHEDEV1_DATA/ does indicate this is an encrypted volume. Was the Photo Station installation/update started probably before the volume was unlocked?

Yes, we encrypt because we're subject to data control regs etc. I think the firmware update may have been done before decrypting but pretty sure we've done that several times before without any (apparent) problems. The app updates would not have been done before decrypting.

Did we break it :( - anything we can do to sort it out or are we looking at a re-build please? We have got back-ups elsewhere so doable if not necessarily desirable.

Thanks for your help with this - appreciated.

I'd be guessing. Wait for support or start again, up to you.

My Photostation entry looks like this on a 253A 4.2.2. You'd have to change your install_path.
[PhotoStation]
Name = PhotoStation
Display_Name = Photo Station
Version = 5.2.3
Enable = TRUE
QPKG_File = PhotoStation.qpkg
Date = 2016-12-16
Shell = /etc/init.d/ImRd.sh photostation2
Install_Path = /share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/.qpkg/photostation2
WebUI = /photo/
Author = QNAP Systems, Inc.
Sys_App = 1
Desktop = 1
Volume_Select = 3
Login_Screen = 1
Web_Port = -1
Class = null
Status = complete
Build = 20160712
FW_Ver_Min = 4.2.0
FW_Ver_Max = 6.0.0

Support deleted the offending apps and all running again. There was no clear understanding of what caused the failure but they were able to clear the problem fortunately, even though it took some time.

Thanks
