Mount SSD as SSD

Post by hakannordell »

Hello, I probably need some help here.

I bought a StarTech.com Dual-Bay 2.5 to 3.5in Adapter Enclosure with SATA III and RAID in order to put two solid-state drives in one bay.
One Samsung SSD 850 PRO 256GB disk, that is alone in the QNAP original bay without an adapter, shows up completely normal.
In contrast, the corresponding SSD in the dual bay in next QNAP slot, have a ID ASMT109x- RAID1 and it is mounted and displayed as HDD, and thus can not be used as SSD in Qutier for example.

What I want to do, is that the SSD in the dual bay will be discovered or installed as SSD.
Any suggestions?

does not work that way, the drives are "combined" into a new device, be glad that the NAS recognizes it at all

Yeah, won't work. Suggest you open a ticket with QNAP for an enhancement request.
Use the forum search feature before posting.

Use RAID and external backups. RAID will protect you from disk failure, keep your system running, and data accessible while the disk is replaced, and the RAID rebuilt. Backups will allow you to recover data that is lost or corrupted, or from system failure. One does not replace the other.

I would say while you might like the Startech to work that way for you, its probably not going to happen.

QNAP has enough challenges with all their certification work when dealing directly with the SSD drives. Having a 3rd party product between the QNAP and the SSD isn't something they are going to probably want to deal with.

SImple solution, remove the drive from the StarTech and mount in directly in the slot. I bet it shows up properly as an SSD.

Don't think contacting QNAP will do much , this is the posterchild example of and "unsupported usage"

I already have an SSD in qnap slot 1, and it works well.
It´s in dual bay in qnap slot 2 (and the SSD in that) tha´s receiving the ID ASMT109x- RAID1.
Must be a way to get around this :D

The drives behind that controller are not transparent to the system, it presents a combined(RAID1) block storage

If you create an ISCSI LUN on the NAs, there is no way for the OS that connects to that block storage to see what drive(s) this is actually sitting on

Extremely long shot, set the enclosure to JBOD instead of RAID1

But then I miss my purpose. To have RAID 1 on two disks on a disk location.

You can't have two entities control the disks

Either the RAID controller in the adapter or the NAS, think about it

That´s ok. I will only have the adapter RAID. But the problem is that qnap transform the SDD into HDD.

That is because the SSD is isolated from the NAS. If the SSD was directly connected to the NAS SATA, it would be seen as SSD. But, with the built in RAID chip, the whole device is presented to the NAS as a HDD. There is nothing you can do about that.

It is no different than the NAS being presented to computers as one massive hard drive. The computer has no clue as to what physical devices are actually storing the data.

Everyone says that it can´t be done, so I give up the idea now. Anyone want to buy a DualBay? I have now rebuilt the structure and put all the hard drives in the UX-500P. The 471 has now RAID-1 with system on the SSD. In the third bay I have the cache and in the fourth, I put a 2TB HDD, but do I really need that not be because the UX has 5 x 4TB on RAID-5. However, I discovered that it is not possible to deploy SSDs in UX. It does not recognize that there is a SSD in the bay.

@All: Thanks for all help.

@Håkan, It's too late for us to give advice now that you've already spent a lot of money on that system. The next time, please ask before buying and configuring.
RAID have never ever been a replacement for backups. Without backups on a different system (preferably placed at another site), you will eventually lose data!

A non-RAID configuration (including RAID 0, which isn't really RAID) with a backup on a separate media protects your data far better than any RAID-volume without backup.

All data storage consists of both the primary storage and the backups. It's your money and your data, spend the storage budget wisely or pay with your data!
