Snapshot on TVS-x73 question

Post by aarbee »

I saw the function of Snapshot and even got a question about how mucht storage I would like to set apart for snapshots.
From vmware and microsofts counterpart I learned that a snapshot is more or the less a save of the current situation. Not persé including the data.
So when I read sonewhere a brief description about the snapshot at the Storagepart, then it looks like it is a backup.
But I guess it is not a backup. In case I throw a document permanently away from the Qnap, then can I not restore it from the snapshot?
Am I correct in it?

If that is that is case, then I wonder about the added value, in case of only 3 users of that server, and having around 8 different backups a week, on 2 different remote nasses.
And I can take and use the reserved space for data myself.
Friendly Greetings,

RobB

I had seen that page allready. But was asking more for what it is then what to do.
Is a snapshot, in case your complete set off harddrives gets destroyed or so, and you can reinstall everything that was on it via the restore of the snapshot?

I doubt that.

Thanks anyway.

Did you read it all? Struggling to understand your question.
Ideally you don't install snapshots on the same set of disks for DR reasons.
The snapshot restore is the data only, you can restore the entire snapshot or individual files. The NAS config is not part of snapshot functionality.

I did read it yes.
Suppose I have Nas1 with 5 disks and make a snapshot to Nas2.
A day later all the disks in Nas1 die.
Can I restore the snapshot which is placed at Nas2?

I also wonder why my TVS-673 is reserving space for a snapshot.

Thanks.

Don't waste your time. Snapshot restore from remote not possible, they've yet to write that functionality or document how to recover as you've asked.

What a joke.
