Re: Disk error after Data Scrubbing

Post by pepprom »

Just for info. The Volume is in read-only mode. So I'm making on other external HDD the full backup of the content of the Volume.
I decided to format all and restart from factory setting. I do believe is a software issue, maybe because the several upgrades, maybe because never done never done a scrabbing, maybe just this electricity fault ..... maybe a combination of all.

I will update when all will be finish. Hopefully everything will be back to normal.

I didn't know that anyone could actually go to a WD location and exchange disks. Then again, I do not live near a WD location.

I am running a TS-412 with 4.3.3.0229 firmware version. Running RAID 5 Obviously reading of these RAID scrubbing issues is a real worry. I went to storage manager and cannot find anywhere that I can alter or turn off RAID Scrubbing?. Am I doing something wrong?

Explained in this thread.
Use the forum search feature before posting.

Use RAID and external backups. RAID will protect you from disk failure, keep your system running, and data accessible while the disk is replaced, and the RAID rebuilt. Backups will allow you to recover data that is lost or corrupted, or from system failure. One does not replace the other.

New update out. No fixes related to data scrubbing so it stays off here.

It is quite obvious that as long as nothing is found, then nothing happens. What value does that observation give you? Nothing!
The issue here is; What happens when something is wrong?

1. Should the system automatically engage measures without your participation, and shut you out?
or...
2. Should the system let you know what it has detected, along with its suggestive action, and still let you decide?

You tell me....
Simple decision for me, Number 2, notification should be sent out before data scrubbing takes things into its own hands. This is my NAS and I should be able to control it how I deem necessary not having some automatic process take over and kill the NAS.

It's explained in the thread.
It's too scary !
It's better to deal with any issues with your disks now instead of later, when your system is in a much worse stuation.

Disk scrubbing weekly isn't what I would recommend but I also wouldn't disable it. Personally I'd run it every second or third month.
I wish we could set Data Scrubbing for quarterly scans unfortunately all I can see is monthly maximum and no way to input your own preferences. This needs to be updated for the next firmware so we can regain the control of our systems.

For those had similar problem like mine. After two days of format, scanning and so on, I restore the QNAP and all is working. No faulty disks.
I can say that there is a BUG on the software that it may start with some issue like a power cut. The NAS is working now like before simply restoring everything to factory.

"PS You can turn off this feature by running Disk Manager, select the Cog/Edit (Global Setting) on the top of the window and turn off data scrubbing in the bottom option."

OK so I found this in the forum, which still has not helped. Firstly, where is "Disk Manager"?? I can find "Storage Management", but then nothing that resembles editing Cog/global settings. Maybe I am dumb, but can someone please just state the path to edit this scrubbing so I can turn it off!!!

Hi,

If you have "Storage Management", you probably don´t have the firmware version 4.3 installed, but 4.2 or earlier.
The feature "Data Scrubbing" has been introduced for firmware version 4.3 with one of the June 2017 updates.

QTS 4.2 has been announced to be the last version for a bunch of devices. Firmware 4.2. still gets some bugfixing and security updates until fall 2017. I wouldn´t expect any new features in 4.2.

Hi @all,

Just read through the thread and my conclusion is to temporarily disable Data Scrubbing and continue with my scheduled monthly full disk scans.
I´m not completely convinced that there is no software bug in the feature implementation here.

Will review my decision in a few months. Thanks for the input, guys!

but what would be a good approach.

we do have changelogs, but how many people here actually bother reading it? kinda like those facebook policies updates and people just. Or is the changelog not emphasizing enough about stuff like raid scrubbing and what it does so users aren't caught off guard.

newsletters? not everyone subscribed to that either.

What about a prompt at firmware upgrade where it warns the user about this, then ask " proceed with update?"

:) hmm

I read changelogs, but it's kinda hard to take QNAP's seriously when they look like this:
