The system volume is full. Some applications...

Post by Mr Davo »

Hi All,

A couple of my NASes (from a considerable fleet) are showing the error message below -

Image

They each have thick provisioning on the storage, and I have turned the threshold alert off.

Can anybody shed any light on what could be causing this error?

Kind Regards,

Davo

can you drop to an SSH Console and type the following:

Code: Select all

df -h
It sounds like your main storage volume IS full.....

Hi Simon,

Thanks for responding to my post; here is a screen capture of the df -h (command) results -

Any further input will be greatly appreciated.

You are full. Please instead of a screen capture, cut-n-paste the Putty output into a posting and "code" wrap it. That will allow responders to cut-n-paste part of your response in a reply.

Hi Simon,

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly; I will try to keep the copying and pasting in mind with future posts.

Can you please explain why I am full?

Regards,

Davo

Further to my last post I have mounted the iSCSI target in Windows Server (as X drive), and as can be seen below there is still plenty of space available in the storage location.

Repost by pasting the df output in a code wrap and I'll then explain.

OK, the above line is why you are full. All of your data is stored there.

Enter the following command and post the results (code wrapped):

Code: Select all

ls -la /share/

Isn't this normal for a thick volume?

I'm not sure what you mean by normal. Static/Thick doesn't let you over allocate disk space like Thin. The "df" command let's you see your real space usage. I personally never use the GUI. I have a ssh session always open to my TS-869L.

This is taken from a healthy NAS, without the issue in the OP, can anybody explain the difference?

Code: Select all

Is this a block LUN?
A block LUN takes the space from the pool immediately regardless of whether it is used by the host or not.
Hence on the host side you may see space free, however the NAS sees it all as space used.

Yes, I am using a LUN (the option that I chose when creating the LUN was iSCSI Target with a mapped LUN).

You still haven't given any information.
Let me repeat
If you create an instant allocation LUN inside a volume it will treat it as used space and deduct from the volume space. However as far as the host is concerned, it shows the "true" used space.
I suspect this is what you did.
Read up on the differences between different LUN types and methods of creation.
