QNAP 453 RAID 5 2 drives failed

Post by mike_ng_gc@yahoo.com »

Need some help here.
I have a QNAP 453 with 4 drives on RAID 5. Drive 2 and 4 showed red LED light at the front. I am unable to access the NAS via it's IP address. What should I do ? How should I change out the faulty drives, what is the sequence ? Should I change one and rebuild the RAID before I change the second one and rebuild ? Thanks.

there is no rebuild from two dead drives on raid5 .. your data is toast

best to start from scratch

Get new drives and rebuild from scratch then restore your data from backups.
Use the forum search feature before posting.

Use RAID and external backups. RAID will protect you from disk failure, keep your system running, and data accessible while the disk is replaced, and the RAID rebuilt. Backups will allow you to recover data that is lost or corrupted, or from system failure. One does not replace the other.

I guess I have to redo it and restore from backup.
Any suggestion on replacing all with 10TB drives?
Would Raid 6 better than 5 if I have a 6 Bay NAS?

Thanks

Yep.

Turn off the NAS, pull out all of your current drives, put in the new drives and turn on the NAS. The NAS should start up as though it was new and step you through the initialization process.

You know of a way to turn your 4-bay NAS into a 6-bay NAS? For 5, or more HDDs, RAID6 is indeed what you should use.

I rebooted the NAS and now all 4 drives are red immediately. Could it be the Raid controller or something else that is a problem?

I just unplug the power and put back in and restart the NAS. All 4 LED lights started as red and the panel showed system booting andnothing else happened.

Did some troubleshooting, I think the NAS motherboard failed. Was able to swap the drives to another QNAP NAS and it boot up ok.
