Snapshot: starting from scratch

Post by babuja »

When i started my TS 251+ only had 1Gb ram and i didn't select the option to build a reservation for snapshot.

I've upgraded to a 8Gb Ram and i've been reading about it and I'm considering to start over again and rebuild so i can build a snapshot for qnap system and data snapshots.

Do you think it worth the effort of starting from scratches and configure all settings again?

And what's the best way to do it?

Only backup data, start from zero, follow install instructions and upload data again?

Cheers guys.

If you are using Storage Pools, you should be able to enable snapshots in place I believe. Open Storage Manager > Storage Space > Manage > Action > Set Snapshot Reserved.

Then Backup you data, document your config, wipe array and start over.

Hi guys, didn't yet procede with this. Major objective is to be able to use snapshot on nas...but i would have to start from scratch and install all app and configure everything all over again, and who know what issues would i have to solve.

I've been reading and "Rsnap" could be a solution, right? What do i think guys? Any other options available?

It might be an option, but won't be integrated into QTS/Storage Manager, and likely won't be able to fully revert to a previous state at a volume level since it seems to be more "filesystem" based vs. block-based like native snapshot is.

It will also have more overhead in terms of storage since it is filesystem based as you are basically making a "full backup" of all the files whereas Snapshot works at the block level and only "backs up" the blocks of data that was changes not the entire file.

So say you change 3MB worth of blocks in a 1GB file, QNAPs snapshot use 3MB of space, rsnap uses 1GB.

I'll try to find another option outside QTS or find the courage to wipe and start again.

Pretty much any option outside of qts is going to be file based.

Any way to backup settings, definitions, apps and then restore after new start?

So let's get into it...i would like to review all processs to avoid surprises:
1. Backup my data from qnap.

2. Backup system settings

3. From backup/restore panel "reinitialize NAS" or "restore defaults&format all volumes"?

4. Creat storage pools, reserve space

Not sure what the best option for me. TS-251+, 8gb ram, 1 volume, raid 1, 2x4Tb WD and about 1.5Tb of data.

5. Restore system settings and data, reinstall apps. Regarding data restore...will all home/multimedia folder be created with the restore of system settings? If so i only need to "upload" all my data to each folder, correct?

6. Done?

I'm i forgetting something?

Step 3) 6 one, half a dozen the other
Step 4) would just do a simple storage pool, thick volume, start with say 50-60% used for volume 1, and maybe 15-20% for snapshot
Step 5) The is the only part I am unsure on, and not sure about. If you restore system settings, I am not sure if that includes the storage partition/volume settings or not.

As for home/multimedia, those are default system folders (assuming you enabled multimedia apps) during install.

I think you have the basics covered.

I didn't understand, sorry for my english. Image

Regarding volume configuration i intend to create a single volume, but not sure yet if as a thick volume or thin multiple volume.
