RAID5 - TS-563 After upgrade to 4.3.3.0299 HDD slot 5 failure

Post by vtphilk »

I have had my QNAP for about a year and never had a problem. I typically take any new firmware update without blinking and upgrade without issue. Recently i upgraded to the 4.3.3.299 and shortly after my system stopped working. I went down to the basement and it was beeping and sounded like the drives were clicking and making all sorts of noise. It sounded like the QNAP was turnning the drives on/off/on etc..

I power cycled it then booted up and found the raid was degraded. After a few minutes the system would lockup again. I then saw a ton of errors about drive 5. So i removed drive 5 (I use slots 3,4,5 HGST 6TB drives). Reserved 1,2 for future cache drives maybe.

WIth 5 removed, the system booted but said I had to factory default (NOT LOSE CUSTOMER DATA) to restore. So after thinking about it I did, I re-imported the RAID shared folders on the volumne and re-enabled the multimedia shares.

the system would work but it was showing degraded obviously. One part of concern is when clicking on the storage pool drive 3 shows "Not member". But its obviously working because I can see all my data. I considered purchasing a new drive for slot 5 but instead insert the drive in slot 5 in 2. It has worked for over 24hrs without issue. I did a complete test on drive in 2 without issue. I'm tempted to add back into raid the drive 2 but concerned that drive 4 shows "Good (not member)".

Has anyone had an issue using slot 5 in the new firmware 4.3.3.299. I'm also tempted to roll back to the previous release but don't want to do anything till i get my raid synced back up to not lose data. Please help!

Open a QNAP helpdesk support ticket. I think they need to know about this. Point them to this thread.
