TS453 USB Transfer Speed

Post by part deux »

3 6T drives in Raid 5 config.
Not the latest OS update, but within the last month or so

USB speeds to external drive are incredibly slow. I've tried two of the three back USB ports as well as the front port. No matter what process I use to transfer files.

Attaching the drive to a desktop computer and using windows to transfer from the server across the network, I've see roughly 65MB transfer speed. With the drive connected directly to the QNAP, the highest speed was 120KB.

Tried two different cables, same drive.

What USB version, how are you copying the files to the driver, QTS version, drive format, etc?

If the drive is just going to be for backups, would probably reformat the drive to native ext4 which should help some with performance. If you are backing up a lot of small files, that will greatly slow your throughput vs. a few BIG files.

You might install the QNAP Diagnostics app and have it do a hdd performance test just to make sure there isn't something funky going on in your raid-5 speeds.

Raid-5 speed seems fine, you are back a release on QTS, although I don't recall anything off the top of my head regarding USB performance fixes in the b299 release.

Have you tried reformatting the drive to ext 4? What are your job settings? How many/what type/size files are you trying to backup?

This drive is also used as USB to feed a TV at a vac home. I'm concerned if the TV can read ext 4 format.

File size range from reasonably small to large. However, given the data transfer rate across the network through a desktop PC, it doesn't make sense to me. Same data cable, same drive, QNAP USB is SLOW SLOW SLOW.

I would open a QNAP helpdesk ticket. The only things I can think of is the FAT32, but they might be able to figure something else out.

I received an email from support.

They requested I install Team Viewer... but didn't tell me where it gets installed. Is this a qnap app, or something for my computer?

It's not a QNAP app, and it's installed on your PC. ;)

It's just a pity that qnap doesn't do anything about it, they only refer to a compatibility list that only contains a few usb drives. and then ignore the problem. I also have this problem with my tvs-463.
