Cached HDD password

Post by Broker_89 »

Hello everyone,

my QNAP TS-131 crashed and I had to reset the OS and recover it from an backup.

The HDD is encrypted and I used to save that password in the OS so it could be unlocked automatically.

After recovering the OS I figured out that the password is not saved anymore (at least it doesn't unlocks the HDD) and I don't have a clue about the password I used.
I already tried all the passwords I normally use but non of them worked.

But the password for the encrypted external USB - HDD is apparently still saved in the OS as I can access that HDD.
Therefore I'd like to know if anyone has an idea, where that password is stored (it's not in etc/shadow) as I have the slight hope, that the (hashed) password is still there.

Or even better, if anyone has an idea how to assign the saved passwords to the HDD.

Thank you very much for your answers, I'm a bit desperate as I'm already trying to recover the NAS now for about a month ...

Kind regards

Next time I'll definitely write it down somewhere but I don't know what you mean by truncated to 16 char?

Where should I enter them?

I already tried to unlock the HDD in the GUI with all the passwords I know and attacked the header of the LUKS encryption without any success.

I'd just like to know, where QNAP / Linux saves the cached password for the HDDs. Do you maybe know where it is saved?

Thank you

Maybe it was not clear but I dont know which password I used. Therefore I‘d like to recover the password from the backup file of the OS or the OS itself.

So does anyone know, where QNap / Linux saves the password of the encrypted HDD?

Thank you
