Change system volume to new volume

Post by dbrodsky9 »

Hi,

This is my situation. I have a TS-835A running Fiurmware 4.3.3.0361 Build 20171101. I originally deployed a Raid-5 Storage Pool with 5 4TB Disks. I've recently decided to expand and start using 8TB disks. I filled the 3 empty bays and created a new Storage Pool 2 and DataVol2, also Raid-5. After migrating the data new shares I want to decommission the 4TB drives, leaving 5 empty bays for 8TB drives. This means i somehow need to make DataVol2 the system volume and also migrate the default shares. How can this be done?

Thanks so much!

AFAIK, you can't. The system isn't on any data volume. It has its own separate partitions configured as RAID1. Your apps are on your initial data volume. The NAS's DOM contains the configuration as to where to boot from. That said, I do not know if 4.3.3 allows you to do what you want. If another forum member doesn't have additional info, open a helpdesk support ticket and ask QNAP.

IMHO, you should have expanded the existing drives with 8TB drives and then added a new drive and go to RAID6. But, that is me.

Answered many times before, there is no option to do that. Would have to backup all data and start from scratch again.

Of course you can do that:
You will need to:
1.Recreate default shares on datavol2
2.Migrate any data from datavol1 to datavol2
3.Now shutdown the unit and remove the 4TB drives.
4.Restart the unit
5.Reinstall the default apps on datavol2
6.Keep the 4TB drives separately until you check everything ok before cleaning them.

I didn't realize I could expand the raid set with dissimilar drives.

Thank you. How do I go about recreating the default shares on Datvol2 and then reinstalling the default apps?

You tell the NAS that you want to expand the RAID. When you do that procedure, outlined in the manual, you replace the existing drives one by one with larger drives. After all of the drives have been replaced, you expand the capacity (there is a button for that).

Then, in order to get to RAID6, you add another drive and run the procedure to migrate from RAID5 to RAID6.

No fussing around with multiple data volumes and app reinstalls.
