I still have massive errors with latest firmware one disk is still giving me read/write errors and refuses to get online, if I change the disc to a new one it gives the same error really don't know what to do except to send em back and buy something else soon.

This ** =(

I appear to also be a lucky winner of this issue, with a QNAP TS-639 PRO & 4 x WD2002FYPS-01U1B04.0 drives in a RAID 5 array. Current QNAP firmware is 3.1.0 Build 0627T. I bought and setup the device on July 20th, and it has been running fine since then, up until the Disk Read/Write Error occured on September 8th. I have a seperate email off to Jason with all the rest of the info he asks for.

This does seem to be an increasingly common problem with a wide range of drive makes and NAS models.
Could Qnap comment on what the problem is? whether its a hardware issue or a problem with configs becoming corrupt ?

Hi clx,
This is caused by the characteristics of this type of HDDs. We're still trying different ways to provide a fix for it.

Hi guys,

my problem was as I wrote here at page 2 of this thread (post wabasaja on Mon Aug 03, 2009 11:06 pm)...

After 7 days of scanning bad blocks via SATA scan within the QNAP admin Tools...I stopped the scan....which
found already more than 1 Mio. bad blocks...

I replaced the problem causing HDD whit a new one ( Seagate ST31500341AS CC1H (1,5TB) and made a rebuild...
LED's went back to green....after some hours i shut the 509 down because I had to left for some days.

The first RAID5 config was 5 x Seagate ST31500341AS CC1G (1,5TB)

I checked the problem causing HHD where QNAP SATA scan recorded more than 1 Mio. bad blocks with all available seatools scans...

seatools found nothing at all....all tests passed without problems...

So what to do....send the HDD to seagate...which I guess is senseless because they do the same scan with their tool...
What would you do??

Tonight I turn the NAS on and let it run thru for the next days to check if I lose another or the same HHD again.

Thx to all!!
Have a nice time everyone out there!!

Spoke too soon, I unplugged the trunked NICs to quiet the Qnap and it dropped 2 drives (~6 Hours after the nics were unplugged and 2 Hours withing each other).
Will be sending QNAP the error logs.

Hi all,
If you're still having Disk Removal, please also change the HDD jumper setting to OPT1 for further test.
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Hi QNAPJason,

Thanks for your Informations!!

Are you talking in context to the jumpers only about some HDD's lets say WD's >= 1,5 TB or about all HDD's with
capacity ??
Also about Seagate Barr. 1,5TB??

Can you have a look at my posts within that thread...and let me know your opinion..would be nice!

Thx in advance!!!
nice day 4all of you!!!

Bummer - I tried upgrading my firmware to the debug version referenced earlier ( U_TS-639_20090902_wakeup_delay_debug-3.1.1.img ) but it failed after the progress bar made it to 6%. I redownloaded it several times and tried again just to confirm I hadn't rec'd a corrupted copy but no dice...failed at 6% each time. I also tried upgrading to the latest non-Beta build ( TS-639_3.1.1_Build0815 ) and then trying to get the Beta version to install, but that didn't help either.

It did upgrade fine to TS-639_3.1.1_Build0815, but I still have the Disk Read/Write Error. I also tried removing the drive, readding it, but it was redetected as failed and thus the RAID5 entry is still degraded and won't allow me to make any changes. (the options are greyed out, anyway - I think it goes into read-only mode when degraded)

I'll try the jumper thing on the 'bad' drive next. After that, will probably see about redoing the whole RAID5 config from scratch.

EDIT: Set jumper setting to OPT1 enabled, removed/readded drive - no joy, still see Disk Read/Write Error. I've avoided breaking and recreating the RAID5 array mainly becuase I'm lazy, but I suppose I'll do that next. Its like there is some bit of QNAP OS that just refuses to 'reset' the disk read/write error after it has first occurred. It still seems to me extremely unlikely the drive itself is really bad...these are brand-new enterprise class drives, after all. Oh well, guess I'll reset everything and try rebuilding it.

I tried to change the disc but same slots still gives me read/write error so it seems like qnap os is killing the whole sataport and not just that disc cause the WD tool says disc is ok.

Hmmm...I finally clicked the 'scan now' button in the 'bad blocks scan' section of the volume management section and after a couple hours scanning the Disk Read/Write Error finally was cleared. After the scan was done that status changed to 'ready' and now the RAID5 array status is 'rebuilding', and after cranking away overnight is at 70%.

I'm a noob w/the QNAP admin....is it SOP to click 'scan now' before any errors are cleared? DOH! Anyway, if it is then maybe others who are having this problem might want to do a 'scan now', be patient and let it complete, and then see if the error clears. I only enabled the OPT1 jumper on the drive that 'failed'...but not the other drives. Now, I guess I'll standby to see if the error recurs on the same drive as previous...or the other drives that don't have OPT1 enabled.

I am having similar issues. I have a TS409, and was running two 1Tb Seagate Barracuda's for more than a year as a mirrored pair. I then decided to upgrade and put 4 drives in.
On trying to go to RAID 5 I started getting issues with one of the original drives (drive 1) - read/write errors, bad blocks etc. Fortunately all my data was still on drive 2. After trying everything I could, I eventually decided there must be something up with the drive, so I ordered a brand new drive, replaced hard drive 1, but within an hour or so had read/write errors on Hard Drive 1, the brand new drive. I then decided to swap out one of the other drives - this time Hard Drive 3 which wasn't yet used, and same again. So I have now tried 3 or 4 drives all reporting the same read/write or bad block errors in Hard Drive bay 1. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
Steve

Will the new beta firmware stop a high LCC?
I got 6 wd 2tb re4 gp disks in my qnap 639 and the LCC is over 2000 in 200 hours and most of the time it have been in use, its pretty high when its not in use...

Will the new beta firmware stop it or isent there comming a fix for this one?
I think alot of users have the same problem whit this

I have implemented the OPT1 settings on all 8 drives. It has been almost 2 weeks and I tried quieting the unit again by unplugging the NICs, unit seems to be working. I will quiet it again over the weekend and will give it a green light for test/production. My hopes are high on this fix.

And for those of you worried about the reduction in transfer speed, I doubt you can saturate the SATA with 1 or even 2 Gig NICs, especially if you are running raid of any sort on these units.

Also, someone had an LLC question, what I have noticed is this, prior to the beta FW, I noticed a high LLC count, but not the same on all drives. 4 had ~2000, 1 ~7000, 3 had ~10000, and the funny thing is that they all were installed at the same time, 3 weeks in testing. And the ones with the higher LLC count were possibly the disk that had the read errors but can't confirm. Post firmware, the count has been relative stable, about 2 weeks in testing. So LLC might have been "reduced" due to firmware.
The folks at QNAP can probably confirm the changes made.

Will update again next week.

[Please HELP]: Disk Read/Write Error

Post by fma2112 » Wed Sep 23, 2009 6:35 am

HI,

We have bought a QNAP 809 Turbo Pro (firmware 3.1.1.815T) which contains 8 Seagate Baracadu 7200.11 1.5 To HDD (model:ST31500341AS; ATA vers: ATA-8; Firmware version: CC1H) configured as a RAID6 in EXT4.

After 6  days of use the drive #6 has been removed from RAID 6 and flagged as read/write error and raid is now in degraded mode   .

1- We have checked Seagate online database using serial number to know if updates were available or if troubles about this model were logged on seagate kb ... but nothing.
2- We have connected this disc to a workstation, formated disc, transfered a lot of data and checked disc with seagate tools .... but nothing.
3- We have repplugged the disc into the QNAP 809 and disc remained with a read/write error.
4- We have launched a HDD Bad Black Scan on this disc but we are waiting now the result ....

After reading all the current post I have noticed that two owner of a QNAP 809/809U have encountered troubles with the HDD in emplacement #6 as us  . Is there any troubles with this model and HDD #6 ?

I have noticed too that it seems that HDD Bad Black Scan does not engage the rebuilding operation or re adding HDD to raid 6.

We are thinking to buy another QNAP 809 NAS (for replication purpose) but is the HDD emplacement #6 "d@mned" ? :D

:?: Does some one has some advices about this because we don't want to restart the QNAP NAS at this time and we have some sensitive data on it !

Thanks in advance.
Kind Regards
QNAP TS-809
