Installed firmware 3.1.1 Build0815T.
Now up and running for a week 24/7 , without drives dropping from the RAID. No iSCSI for now.
Today WD2002FYPS HDD1 on this brand new QNAP 639 pro NAS, is reported to have a read/write error. RAID6 degraded. SMART shows HDD GOOD

Contacted QNAP support. Got direct respons.

Updated firmware to beta 3.1.2 build 1001T. Scanned HDD1. After the scan the drive was added to the RAID again and the RAID6 started rebuilding. After the rebuild the RAID6 was no longer degraded.

I am glad to have set up RAID6. This gives some extra protection in this case.
For now, the NAS is up and running again.

Okt 25 2009 - Upgraded firmware to 3.1.2 Build 1014T.
Nov 04 2009 - Received new firmware from WD. Upgraded all HDD's to 04.05G05 firmware.
Dec 2009 - Upgraded firmware to 3.2.1 build 1231T
Jan 16 2010 - I really believe that the problem is solved. NAS runs 24/7 and so far I encountered no more errors with the drives. Good job QNAP and WD :D

Hi guys,
Here's an official HDD firmware update released by Western Digital on RE4-GP (WD2002FYPS) drives.
It fixes the compatibility issue with many RAID systems.

http://files.qnap.com/download/Forum/WD ... elease.pdf
Description of Change:
Firmware Improvements: Addressing firmware compatibility associated
with some systems with specific power management and warm boot
execution paths. These changes do not affect the form or fit of the drive but
do positively affect the function of the drive.
Issues Identified and Addressed:
1) Command Completion Time Outs:
a)The RE4 GP drives intermittently would spin down while exiting
from the lowest idle power mode (heads park in the ramp
automatically) due to a false RPM speed fault.
b) Improved error handling of a very specific type of servo defect
to eliminate multiple missed revolutions during the operation of
write commands.
2) Warm Boot Drop-Offs:
The drive can drop off line intermittently after a warm boot (RAID
initiated reboot following a RAID build).
3) Performance:
Optimized sequential write performance to eliminate pauses during
data transfers
Please ask your local WD tech. support for the availability of firmware.

B.R.

Heya all

Just got my new 419P with 4x SAMSUNG HD154UI 1AG0 (1.5GB F2) and after it has build the raid 5 it says disc 4 has read/write errors.
Is this a bug, seing all the topics about it or is that HD failing already?

**update: Seems I have bad luck. A normal scan didn't reveal an errors but I let it run a detailed surface scan last night and that gave LBA errors. heading back to swap the disc now.

I just want to drop a note here to share some progress. It seems I'm stuck in a bad batchfor WD20EADS (WD 2Tb Green) disks. One has dropped offline with a sense problem, one has gotten a serious rash of bad blocks and now a third drive is going, this one also due to readfaults that tripped up the QNAP-809.

In addition I've had issues with slot 8 dropping offline under load, but that seemed to be working better during rebuild today, untill the read errors in slot 2 started cropping up, making the NAS segfault, oppsie and die. Currently cloning the bad disk (slot 2) on to a new disk (same type) and hoping to get the RAID up in degraded mode tomorrow.

What worries me most is that the SATA bus in the box seems to lack much fault tolerance and when one disk goes south beasically nothing else is accepted as proper in that bay untill a full reboot of the NAS.

So far this has not worked out great.

Anyone tried the TS-809U-RP with the Deskstar 7K2000 2TB disks?

Has this Deskstar model been tested throughly to be compatible with the TS-809U-RP?
I encountered raid issues with WD2002FYPS and was not about to bother with firwarmware upgrades, so I sent them all back.
Trying to find a alternate 2TB model that I know will work properly.

After several read write errors, disk ejects, and bad sector messages (only at HDD5), exchanged the WD-disk 2 times with new ones(04.05G04) and still same faults came up. I'm now using following firmware for:
TS509: 3.1.2-1001T
HDD 1...4 WD2002FYPS: 04.05G04
HDD 5 WD2002FYPS: 04.05G05

Before asking to QNAP if they could post it, I've found the firmware on the web. I had no response from WD... yet...
Got this firmware from: 04.05G05
[100518]; NEW LINK FOR FIRMWARE:04.05G05

I used my desktop PC for firmware update (as DOS I've used DR-DOS 7.03 which already installed in mult. boot setup on my PC), it's simple and done in couple of minutes. Just follow instructions:
See the attached regarding a disk drive firmware revision change for the WD RE4 WD2002FYPS drives, from fw 04.05G04 to 04.05G05.
This version of the utility requires that the disk drive be attached to a motherboard SATA controller. This version of the utility requires that you boot to DOS.
To run the utility, ensure that the files 0405G05.exe and 0405G05.bin are in the same subdirectory, and type 0405G05.

Image

Before rebuilding, do a complete disk scan of the corrupted disk(s) in "Volume Management", than the rebuild will start itself.

The TS-509 has successfully scanned (in my case HDD5) and rebuild the array.
Maybe it's worth trying for you too. I'll get back on this later with results (uptime of raid5).
[091026] System Up Time: 3Day 6Hour 28Minute(s) (Raid 5: 59h46m) and UDMA_CRC_Error_Count remains the same.
[100524] See also post "Sat Jan 30, 2010 8:40 pm".
I still had this parameter, "199 UDMA_CRC_Error_Count" (S.M.A.R.T. log), which was gaining value (probably due to bad sata controler series). I've RMA'ed the NAS, back in February, and no problems since then.
[100907] Updated every time to latest FW (now; 3.3.2 build 0819T) since release of Twonky-QPKG. no problems encountered(!)...

Hi dnz16,
We've determined that it's hardware issue with your TS-509 Pro for the HDD drop-out issue. Our tech. support will contact you shortly about the replacement process.

I have a 439pro with two WD20EADS (Western Digital) drives. Drive one drops out of the Raid 1 array I've setup, at least twice now. Each time I've Scanned for Bad Blocks, Rebooted and it's back working after a short rebuild. I'm curious if the TS509 hardware issue may be the same as the problem I'm experiencing?? I've also suspected that the 439pro may have loose drive connections since both times it failed seemed to be shortly (within a day) after I've had to move the box (shutdown of course).

This is with a Qnap 409 PRO - 2.1.4 Build 0318 (now using 3.1.0 Build 0708T) - ST31000340NS.

No read / write errors or bad blocks. I also swapped the unit with a newer sata controller still no luck. Most of the time "drive x plug out" happens after a reboot or a power failure.

Hi,
Spc337, i got the same problem, even though my HD dropout havnt been after a shutdown or after af move of the Qnap.

My 3 weeks old Qnap 639 pro (firmware 3.1.1) , have now lost connection with the same disk twice,
while the Qnap had been powered on for a day or 2.
Im running raid 5, and its disk 6 that has the problem.

Im now running a scan for bad blocks on the HD6:

Disk Model Capacity Status Bad Blocks Scan SMART Information
Drive 1 WDC WD15EADS-00P8B0 01.0 1397.26 GB Ready Scan now Good
Drive 2 WDC WD15EADS-00P8B0 01.0 1397.26 GB Ready Scan now Good
Drive 3 WDC WD15EADS-00P8B0 01.0 1397.26 GB Ready Scan now Good
Drive 4 WDC WD15EADS-00P8B0 01.0 1397.26 GB Ready Scan now Good
Drive 5 WDC WD15EADS-00P8B0 01.0 1397.26 GB Ready Scan now Good
Drive 6 WDC WD15EADS-00R6B0 01.0 1397.26 GB Bad blocks scanning:(41%) Stop Good

The Hds is also only 3 weeks old.

I can see the disk that has the problem is the only one with a different number.
Can it be the problem or is it the NAS?

Im thinking about getting the HD 6 switched with a new one where I brought it,
even though I dont think there is anything wrong with the HD.
Otherwise im thinking about getting the Qnap swapped for a new one
at the store where i brought it.

or should I try to upgraded to firmware 3.1.2 beta ?

I will do that if this happens again because after a reboot a Qnap engineer can't help me because the raid is rebuilding again.

Hi Jason - What are we losing by installing the new firmware? Does disabling NCQ impact the performance? Is this a work around for a problem with the Drive itself (i.e. does the drive not implement NCQ correctly?) or is this a temporary fix until QNAP gets NCQ working correctly with Western Digital Drives??

Thanks

Hi Jason, even though I allready upgraded to 3.1.2, I would like to know the same as spc337!

Back to the firmeware, 4 hours after I upgraded the Qnap to 3.1.2 last night, it lost disk 6 again!!

Im now returning the disk 6 today to the local shop and getting the WD15EADS-00P8B0 instead of the R6B0,
to see if that helps.
If that dosn't help i'll return the Qnap box for a new one, as I know the local shop got another Qnap 639 on stock.

After that i'm out off options

Thanks
Muggi
