Expanding storage space

Post by dbairaktaris »

Hi there,

I have successfully upgraded the 2 RAID-1 disks on my QNAP TS-231P (4.3.5.0760) as per instructions but I was not given/cannot find an option to expand my storage space.
I am stuck with the old legacy volume space of 1.79 TB instead of the 9.1TB I was expecting.

Looked on-line, looked everywhere cannot find an option, a method or a button ... :?:

Please please help,

Thank you very much

Did you follow directions from here?
http://docs.qnap.com/nas/4.3/cat2/en/st ... oragepools

You expand the volume after expanding the pool

Also stuck, i dont want to create MORE storage pools or RAID volumes, i want to EXPAND the one i have.

This was WAY easier on the ARM version, but this Intel version of QNAP seems to have over complicated a simple task. I removed 2 x 500gb drives (1 at a time), rebuilt the RAID 1, meaning i not have about 2 x 1.5Tb of space i want the single RAID 1 volume to use use instead of the 500Gb one it has.

I have been a network specialist over 20 years, this is way simplier on LSI / Avago controllers (thats not easy, but it works), i cant find ANY expand inside thie QNAP (TS-253Be)
Many Thanks

UPDATE

Think i found it, for anyone reading this, its NOT in a place you would expect, this assumes you have replaced all the disks in the RAID volume already (i went from 2 x 500Gb to 2 x 2000Gb (2Tb), mine is "expanding" that RAID 1 volume now.

Go to:
- Storage & Snapshots > Storage > Storage/Snapshots
- Click "Storage Pool 1" then MANAGE (top right)
- Window should open "Storage Pool 1 Management"
- Just above the RAID Group 1 which has (in my case) both disk, to the upper right under Manage, there is "Replace disks one by one", this is where i saw the extra space.... after a warning its now re-syncing the volume with what i hope is my free space.

UPDATE 2

Its completed that expansion and the POOL is now listed as the size of the new drives HOWEVER the storage volume is still at the smaller size, so that now needs "expanding" in to the unused space of the llarger pool, so:

Go to:
- Storage & Snapshots > Storage > Storage/Snapshots
- Click "DataVol1 (its under the Pool) then MANAGE (top right)
- Window should open "DataVol1 Management"
- Top right, middle button "Resize Volume", the new window your notice the POOL now shows the NEW unused space, click "Set to Max, then apply it, it will then show "Expanding", once done you have the new space in the same POOL and VOLUME as before with no data loss

This appears the same as LSI / Avago, where a RAID is created, then a volume inside it, the volume can not be larger than the RAID size, however the RAID size can be larger (which is what QNAP is calling the "pool"
Many Thanks

it sounds like you may not have followed the process of 'replace to expand'. There are two ways to go about this. Way A swaps drives out with the intent of expanding the pool/volume. Way B just replaces smaller drives with bigger drives, but will not result in additional capacity for expansion. it sounds to me like Way B was used.

If that is the case, your only option is to backup the data, destroy the volume, and re-create from scratch. I have encountered several QNAP models from various generations where I work, which had some admin before me do Way B. My only recourse was to backup, destroy, reconfigure, restore.
