Is it possible to reclaim 892Gb of missing disc space?

Post by Ernie Fendelbin » Mon Sep 16, 2019 9:23 pm

I try to clean up a volume on my TS259 NAS, because it is almost full (98% used!). But can't figure out how to claim my missing disc space, or where it's gone in the first place.

The TS259 contains two discs. Bay one (/dev/sda3) is a 1T EXT4 disc, bay two (/dev/sdb3) is a 2T EXT4 disc. My question is about the first disc. 'df' reports:

Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
rootfs 152M 128M 24M 85% /
/dev/root 152M 128M 24M 85% /
tmpfs 64M 364K 64M 1% /tmp
tmpfs 499M 4.0K 499M 1% /dev/shm
tmpfs 16M 0 16M 0% /share
/dev/sda4 371M 268M 104M 73% /mnt/ext
/dev/md9 510M 235M 275M 47% /mnt/HDA_ROOT
/dev/sda3 916G 895G 21G 98% /share/HDA_DATA
/dev/sdb3 1.8T 1.4T 476G 75% /share/HDB_DATA
tmpfs 1.0M 0 1.0M 0% /mnt/rf/nd

I.e. 916Gb space on the disc /dev/sda3, but with 873Gb used only 3% free space. In an attempt to clean out this disc, I issued 'du --max-depth=1 -h' on the mount point /share/HDA_DATA. This reports only 3.2G total from the /share/HDA_DATA root down. With the bulk of it in one subdirectory (1.7G in ./Data1) and the rest distributed between the other subdirs. The biggest being ./.qpkg with 472M.

It seems to me that only 3.2Gb of the 916Gb is used, but 'df' reports that 895G is used! Where is the missing 892Gb(!) gone and how can I reclaim this mysteriously lost disc space? Anybody any idea?

Have you run a filesystem check on that device yet?

production NAS: TS-569 Pro with Debian 10.0 'Buster' (power on/off times are < 1 minute)
backup NAS: TS-559 Pro+ with QTS 4.2.6 #20190921

Got the same idea, but unfortunately attempts to find system check/correct with e2fsck where unsuccessful up to now. Followed [deleted-url]/examination-failedcannot-unmount-disk-error/, but umount kept complaining: /share/HDA_DATA: device is busy

After stopping the proccesses multiple times and adding the -l option to umount, and /etc/init.d/services.sh stop again after the forced unmount, I finally got e2fsck to work on this device.

Ran e2fsck -f -v -C 0 /dev/sda3 and this reclaimed the space! In stead of 98% used, the device now has 1% in use. Hurray! Case closed.

Hmm, I saw that. It is prefixing 'unoffical' to the url. No malware site, but a broken link indeed. But, the information I found overthere was helpfull, so I keep the link. Others are invited to figure out what the real link is :-)

it was at one point a malware site .. I guess whoever bought the URL (with a probably stolen CC) has lost interest
