Migrate RAID5 with volume encryption from TS-453A to TS-453D

Post by TomTom »

Hi,
I have a TS-453A (running QTS 4.4.2) with 4 WD-HDDs configured in RAID-5 and hardware-encryption switched on.
I have configured the RAID-5 as a storage pool with a thick volume and snapshots turned on.

Planning to move over to a more powerful TS-453D I'm wondering about the migration options:
According to this article https://www.qnap.com/en/how-to/knowledg ... he-old-one, everything should work including apps and setup; is that really true for encrypted volumes also?

As I'm "spoiled" by Windows I tend to think it could be useful not to just move disks from one machine to a new one but it could be an advantage (performance-wise??) to setup everything from scratch and then do a restore of data.
Does that make sense for a Linux-based NAS?

Thanks for your recommendations.
  • Device: TS-453D
  • Firmware: 4.5.2.1566
  • HDD: 4xWD-RED 3TB, configured as Raid 5 in a storage pool

you should be able to just move the disks over

https://www.qnap.com/en/nas-migration/

have external backups in any case

Backing up the complete volumes is tedious but necessary, thats clear.
Regarding snapshots: when moving over the volumes to a new device, I assume that also the old snapshots will be available? This would be nice.

Regarding setting up the new NAS from scratch and restoring data from a backup: is there any use (spacewise, performancewise) of doing this or does it just take much time and effort?

dont know about snapshots..I'd say they should move over

and a resetup shouldn't be needed in this case

Just to complete this thread:
I've done backups and then swapped the disks over to the TS-453D as described in QNAPs article,
and: surprise!!! everything worked
