Data Recovery - Outside QNAP

Post by daNutz »

Hi,

If i was to suffer a hardware failure and for some reason i wasn't able to obtain another QNAP device, what are the best options to reassembling, mounting and recovering data from the drive array on another Linux platform?

You will need to find a system that has enough SATA ports so you can manually build the RAID array.

Depending on the type of volume(s) used in the QNAP you will need to use the lvm and mdadm commands in Linux to manually mount the raid array(s) and volume(s).

I don’t have backup of the video files on my plex server (I can always d/l them again) but I do have backups of the plex app folders (minus thumbnails) and the Transmission folders and associated .torrent files.
RAID is not a Back-up!

H/W: QNAP TVS-871 (i7-4790. 16GB) (Plex server) / TVS-EC1080 (32Gig ECC) - VM host & seedbox
H/W: Asustor AS6604T (8GB) / Asustor AS7010T (16GB) (media storage)
H/W: TS-219 Pro / TS-509 Pro
O/S: Slackware 14.2 / MS Windows 7-64 (x5)
Router1: Asus RT-AC86U - Asuswrt-Merlin - 386.7_2
Router2: Asus RT-AC68U - Asuswrt-Merlin - 386.7_2
Router3: Linksys WRT1900AC - DD-WRT v3.0-r46816 std
Router4: Asus RT-AC66U - FreshTomato v2021.10.15

Misc: Popcorn Hour A-110/WN-100, Pinnacle Show Center 250HD, Roku SoundBridge Radio (all retired)
Ditched QNAP units: TS-269 Pro / TS-253 Pro (8GB) / TS-509 Pro / TS-569 Pro / TS-853 Pro (8GB)

Thanks for the response.

i too have the apps files backed up but ive had to re-download my entire movie/tv collection a few times over the last decade and would rather not have to in the future, which is why i ask the question:)

I appreciate i would need to find compatible hardware but didnt know if it would be as simple as you say?

If you are very adept at using Linux, know your away around the CLI and have worked with lvm and mdadm, it is simple. If you have never used Linux or do not know much about how to use lvm and mdadm, then it will not seem as simple, since the learning curve is steep.

Since you have your EC1080 setup in RAID6, you will need a minimum of 8 SATA ports on the other system to read the RAID array. Your other option to purchase another QNAP with at least 8 bays, but the RAID array will always be in degraded mode, or you can purchase as 12 or 16 bay unit.
