Static v Thick volume (Ssd cache vs qtier)

Post by VinceCheong »

Hey guys, so recently I've just bought a TS-453BT3 4-bay QNAP. Gonna be using it on RAID5 with 4x8TB Ironwolf NAS, and solely for my own personal video editings. (Maybe on 2k, 4k, 6k, ProRes422HQ files). I would be adding a pair of Samsung 970 Evo PLUS soon for Caching. Would be suing FCPx and PremierePro, and basically would like to use it as an "external" drive to edit everything on.

But my question is, do i really need to create a Thick Volume, or can i just use Static Volume and call it a day? Wont be planning on "expanding" my storage pool anytime soon. And would be connecting to my imac 27" via Thunderbolt3 for now.

Would i be missing out a lot on Static Volume + just SSD caching, or should i just leave it on Thick volume with Qtier.
Be editing off the NAS, and using small portion of the NAS for some personal archives or backups, and maybe using it as a DropBox backup too maybe.
Sorry, I really can't find much documentation on Static vs Thick for video editing of a very very small scale, and if it's recommended to use SSD Cache over QTier and vice versa.

Forget about Cache or Tier for sequential tasks (like NLE) .. asked and answered many times

only part not answered is static or volume.

But what's the reasoning about ssd caching?

SSD caching would be good for databases or many small files, etc where high IOPS of reoccurring reads/writes are needed

static is a bit faster if you don't need the features of snapshots etc

Don't forget external backups

Yeah, i've been digging thru the forum, trying to read as much as possible about Bob's comments.
I've just cancelled my order for SSD NVMe order, and gonna change my thick volume to Static and see how it goes.

not sure what other things would I be missing out other than snapshots, but i doubt it'd need snapshots for 'redundancy' unless i screw up by accidentally deleting things.
I have no other plans for external backups as for now. this would be my "only" backup for now, on Raid5.

RAID is not a backup .. as you just said .. the data is gone if accidentally (or maliciously) deleted .. or failure of the NAS

just saying
