RAID volume / storage pool displaying less than it should?

Post by Leninsaccountant »

I'm wondering if someone can help me with my QNAP NAS.

I currently have 4 x 12tb HDDs in my NAS using a RAID5 setup.

It seems that the total capacity of both my storage pool and my RAID5 group is 27.26 TB.

Even when allowing for the difference between HDD advertised capacity and how Windows calculates hard disk sizes, this is significantly less than what an online RAID 5 calculator says should be my total available space.

12 TB advertised = 10.91 TB actually usable. If I use this calculator: http://www.raid-calculator.com/default.aspx and input a RAID 5 setup with 4 x 10.91TB disks, it says I should have 32.73 TB total capacity, whereas at the moment I only have 27.26TB.

It might help to know about the history of HDDs in my setup. I started off with 1 x 10 TB drive. Then I added 2 x 12 TB drives. I set up a RAID 5 array with these disks, but because one drive was 10TB, all drives in the RAID5 array were limited to 10TB each.

After this, I added another 12 TB drive, and then replaced the 10 TB drive with a 12 TB drive. Now, I have 4 x 12TB drives, but less capacity than I should.

Any help you can give me would be great.

Thanks

so when you added the last 12Tb drive, did you actually do a pool expansion ?
