Qnap reseted while recovering raid

Post by nax_hh »

Hi all!

I have a TS-251 and this last week has been a bit crazy.

I got an alert that one of my 2 disks had some bad SMART sectors.
After looking a bit into the problem I bought a new disk.

I went into the device admin panel and ejected the bad drive. Inserted the new and starting to reconstruct. It said it will take 7hrs so I went to sleep.
Next day it said 42 hours remaining. I thought it was strange but i left it running. A few hours ago qnap now says the disk 1 was read only. the **?

Anyway. I decide to do a hard reset and see what happens because it didn't make a lot of sense in general.
But the nas didn't start. It started blinking red.

I turn it off and ejected the disks. now it wants me to reconfigure it, seems it has lost all it's configuration
I can see the UI and find it in qfinder but ssh doesn't work.

Code: Select all

 ssh admin@192.168.1.143
ssh: connect to host 192.168.1.143 port 22: Connection refused
Unsure on how to proceed here to recover my raid 1

there was no need to "eject" the drive from GI, a hotswap is the only thing needed

the other disks could have issues to (if same age and batch), might explain the slow rebuild prediction, so now your backups come into play

A bit on update on this.

So I removed all the drives on the qnap and started it. then added a new WD Red and configured it as if it was new.
After all that I added one of the faulty drives. The drive started as read only. So I took the chance to copy files that where not in my backup into the qnap again.

I'm scaning the other drive in my pc just for curiosity and learning sake and is soo slow that is indeed totally out.

As for stats they lasted 1.696 days based on qnap data. RIP

I still find it very much weird that both failed at around the same time but ** happens.
Seems i will need to buy a second disk since now I have only 1 running.

good rule not to waste your data
never rebuilt old drives raid degraded pool with new hdd
WITHOUT BACKUP
wish luck
crush qnaps like a thanos crushing planets
Updates are compromise between old bug patches and new bugs introduced. 8)
do you backup..then kill it with fire
stuff:mikrotik Crs309-1g-8s+in & s+rj10 x4
