No more reaction and all LEDs red

Post by knickebein »

Hi there, I'm new in this forum.

I've got a QNAP TS-253 Pro with 2x 2TB WD20EFRX for NAS in a Mirroring-RAID.

Yesterday I got an error-mail from the NAS that "System fan 1 failed".

On the NAS the LEDs for Power, Status and HDD2 where steady red, while HDD1 was steady green. LAN was flashing orange.

After removing HDD2 and a restart, all LEDs (except LAN) where steady red. All further experiments to remove or insert one or both HDDs failed with the same result.

After power on everytime the LEDs are red immediately. There is no beep - not at the start and not after a while. Holding the reset button has no effect.

The website isn't accessible, Qfinder Pro doesn't find the device and a ping to the fix IP got no answer.

But: the fan is running...

Must i assume that the NAS has a board-defect?

Ooooh, thx! I searched a lot and found a lot - but obviously within the wrong forum and without the right key words...

That seems to be exactly my problem, but unfortunately I don't have the right tools and skills.

So, if here isn't anybody who knows help (like a service in Germany to do this), I will have to replace the device. Damn!

OK, learning for lifetime...

I bought some 100-Ohm-resistors and built it in by using bridges between Pin 1 and 8 of the LPC-CN1-connector (see attached photos).

What happened? After turning on the power, the power button-LED flashes green once and after that everything is dark (even the four LEDs that were red before).

Than I built in one HDD. After that the same - but the HDD1-LED shines green permanent. But still no beep, no blinking power or status LED. Even after minutes.

Any ideas? Must I use a multimeter or oscilloscope now to check the exact voltage?

Btw.: do you know the order of the LEDs?
HDD1 (LED4) - HDD2 (LED5) - ? (LED6) - ? (LED7) - LAN (LED2) - Power button (LED1)- Backup Button (LED)

Addendum: I just measured the voltage now. Without the resistor there are 2,1 V between Pin 1 and 8/10. With the 100 Ohm-resistor it's 1,2 V. Should be OK?

What would be the exact voltage? 1.7 V? And what would bei the correct resistor for that? I only know the U = R x I formular from my school time. But that means that the voltage rises with higher resistance?

Do I have to choose an exact W-value? Nobody here mentioned it... I bought 100 Ohm / 0.6 W (https://smile.amazon.de/gp/product/B07K ... UTF8&psc=1).

doubt the resistor will have to dissipate much heat..so it's shouldn't matter

if you want to know what the resistor does..check here

Hi dolbyman,

yeah, I saw this video before.

In the meantime I installed the second HDD without any change. Then I increaded a second and third resistor (in line) and got 1.65V and 1.75 V. That should be perfect, I thought.

But it's still the same:
- when I press the power button, its green light flashes shortly and goes off
- after that the HDD LEDs shine green permantly and the HDDs start to spin
- After a view seconds the system shuts down automatically
- A few seconds more and it starts again automatically with the same symptoms as mentioned above
- The LAN LED is flashing orange all the time
- No beep and no status LED

I removed the CR2032 battery as well and waited a few minutes before installing it again. No change.

I don't know, what to do more. QNAP wants modest 350 USD...

before you send it to qnap for repair, might aswell just buy a migration compatible device

Sure. I won't pay 350 USD for it...

The strange thing ist, that the voltage was too high (2.2V) - exactly corresponding to the described bug - and that it is correct with the resistor.

But the status LED is fully dead. Although the fan, the HDDs and the LAN-Port are working. And the device isn't gone completely - because I can turn it off with the soft power button. And strange, too: the reset button has no effect. and then there are the beeps...

Any other idea, before I kick it to the moon?

Thank you for your effort.

Yes, I tried to remove the RAM.
The power supply delivers 3.2V.
No signal on HDMI.
I changed the battery, too.
Waited one night, now.
No change.
I give up.

Thx for tryin'!

removing the ram will 100% result in failure, as the system will not start without it

use the ram in a compatible system or use known good ram
