What to do with this configuration [7.28TBx3 in RAID5 + 7.28 single disk]

Post by mcgrawcm »

Hi there,

I have a 4-bay TS-431P with four WD 7.28TB HD drives.

I intended to install all 4 drives and configure in a single Storage Pool with RAID5 (yes, RAID10 could also be possible) with one Thick volume.

Somehow I accidentally added one of the HDs into a separate RAID group within the Storage Pool, and did not realize the problem until attempting the RAID migration (from Single --> RAID1 --> RAID5).

As a result, I now have one Storage Pool with 2 RAID groups, one of which is 7.28TB x3 in RAID5, the other is 7.28TBx1 as Single disk.

Is there any way to recover from this without simply backing up the data elsewhere, then rebuilding from scratch? I was hoping I could somehow extricate the Single disk from the Storage Pool, as there is only about 6TB of data on the system at the moment.

Please advise and thanks!

Before you go RAID10 .. go RAID6 .. has better redundancy

You sadly have to start from scratch as you cannot remove the drive from the pool
