Volume Encryption and Theft Recovery

Post by nasnoc123 »

Hello everyone.

For the sake of securing a Volume in the QNAP NAS using a password encryption, is there a better way to enable encryption and not have to enter a password for volume mounting after a reboot/shutdown of the NAS when it comes back up?

If the NAS is removed offsite (stolen or something else), that feature makes perfect sense.

However, in a controlled environment when the NAS is on-site but suffers a power loss/abrupt shutdown, reboot, etc., what is the best way to encrypt that volume/data, keep it encrypted and allow for an automated power up without an admins' intervention?

Thank you.

How is the NAS supposed to know if the shutdown was because of a powerdown/powerloss/theft ?

You cannot have your cake and eat it too.

You can store the encryption key on the device, so it can "power up without an admins' intervention", but this defeats your original argument to use encryption for protection against theft (as it will unlock then as well).

Thank you for the reply. Just as I suspected. Wanted to get another opinion on the matter.
