[SOLVED] Unallocated space after RAID expansion "succeeds"

Post by BeadyEyeT »

I upgraded the disks in a RAID 1 array using the Manage > Replace Disks One By One interface. I followed the procedure with both disks, letting the RAID array rebuild after each new disk. Once they were upgraded, I returned to Replace Disks One By One and was able Expand Capacity on the Storage Pool which initiated a RAID sync, as expected. Now the sync is complete with a confirmation in the system log:

Code: Select all

Severity Level	Date	Time	Users	Source IP	Application	Category	Content
Information	2021/09/20	22:14:25	System	127.0.0.1	---	---	[Storage & Snapshots] Finished expanding RAID group. Expansion was performed by replacing the disks one by one.
However the expanded capacity is not available to the Storage Pool and the option to try again under the Management menu is greyed out. So now I'm stuck with ~2TB of unallocated space the pool and no clear way to try expanding again. What can I do to assign the additional space to my storage pool now that the GUI is not providing the option? Thanks!

How is your Pool set up? Can you post some picture from storage manager?

The pool should be expanded, but you'll need to expand the volume(s) too, to access the space.

The storage pool expanded, appropriately, but it turns out the volume expansion was my missing step.

In my case, I needed to also reboot the NAS to allow the system to perform FS checks and resolve an "abnormal state" message I received when attempting to expand the volume. After restarting the NAS, the volume expansion went off without a hitch:
  1. Expand the storage pool under Storage/Snapshots
  2. Select the volume and click Manage
  3. Click Resize Volume at the top of the window
  4. Set the New Capacity to desired amount below maximum
  5. Apply changes and wait for synchronization to complete
Thanks for pointing this out. Hopefully this time I will process the fact that there are three layers to consider when expanding storage capacity: (1) disks, (2) pools, and (3) volumes
