I had a TS-431, with 4x2TB disks, RAID 5. It had almost run out of space for my Time Machine backups (main use). I bought 4x8TB disks (why not? I thought) and it accepted them. It told me that I could expand the static volume to 21.(something) TB. But when I clicked the Expand Capacity button, it said no, because there is a limit of 16 TB on data volumes. It wouldn't (as I would expect) expand to 16TB and leave the rest of the space unused.
I asked QNAP, and the reply was that my problem was a 32-bit processor. I found somebody selling a TS-451D2 on eBay, and I bought it. Installed my disks, QRS 4.5.4, and it works (after a couple of firmware updates), but it STILL refuses to expand my static data volume. QNAP hasn't replied when I asked what was the Unix command behind the Expand Capacity button, nor on how to expand the capacity to 16 TB, nor on why the problem persists on a 64-bit machine. Unless, of course, the 431 was already 64 bit (I didn't check, d'oh!) and it wasn't that problem at all.
Can any of you grizzled users help me? Perhaps by pointing me to a relevant forum post? Or in any other way?

Re: 16 TB limit on 64-bit NAS?
Did you created a new storage pool and volume with a larger inodes size (for your purpose 64K)?
When you just put in your existing set of disks, you end up with a legacy pool, where the 16TB Limit still persitsts.

Re: 16 TB limit on 64-bit NAS?
The x31 (no suffix) cannot do storage pools, just legacy volumes
Migrating these disks to a new unit will still be legacy, so you need to start from scratch with static volumes or storage pools
