New NAS: EXT3 or EXT4 ?

Post by Bronsky » Sat Oct 10, 2009 5:16 pm

Hello,

I want to buy a new TS-239 Pro NAS with two 1 TB HDD. Want to use a RAID 1 configuration.

Is it wise to format in EXT4 filesystem from the beginning (So in the future upgrade to > 2TB is possible.)?
Or do you recommend use EXT3 and change later to EXT4.

Are there any cons using EXT4?

Thanks in advance..

Hi Bronsky,

Is it wise to format in EXT4 filesystem from the beginning (So in the future upgrade to > 2TB is possible.)?

Yes, EXT4 have many advantages.
1.Support Larger File Size (16TB for One Single File)
2. Support Larger Volume Size (1 EB = 10^6 TB)
3. Better Performance (Approximately 10% faster than EXT3 in RAID 5)
Etc.
But for IT service, you may need to consider about the stability of EXT4.

Or do you recommend use EXT3 and change later to EXT4.

There is no UI interface for change from EXT3 to EXT4.
So it is better to make your choice from the beginning.

Are there any cons using EXT4?

Cons: Stability
You can take a look on wiki. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ext4#Disadvantages
