I have just purchased a QNAP TS410 for backup purposes, I have a ts509 with 5 x 2tb drives and had planned on using the 410 with 4 internal 2tb and 1 x external as a "cheap" backup solution.
However upon examing the inside of the 410 ive noticed there is a rather large gap in the top of the unit, where the display was placed on the 419/439 models. I can also see that it uses some sort of PCI-E card to pass sata power and connection to the 4 internal drives.
So i have a few questions:
1) Is it possible to directly connect another hard drive internally by an extra sata connection possibly direct connected to the motherboard?
2) When using external ESATA does the 410 see it as an internal or external unit?
3) When something is connected by ESATA can it be formatted and used as a normal share ( possibly in a JBOD or RAID setup? )
4) Is there an additional Power connector which can be taken from the unit of the Qnap TS410?

I am very envious that you have bought the TS410 as a backup device to your TS509 mate.boxrick wrote:I have just purchased a QNAP TS410 for backup purposes, I have a ts509 with 5 x 2tb drives and had planned on using the 410 with 4 internal 2tb and 1 x external as a "cheap" backup solution.

I can answer a couple of your questions:
Q2 The ESATA is seen as an external device in the relevant tab in the web interface.
Q3 The ESATA is seen as a share, regardless of what files you have installed and is called Esata1 and so on.
I can't help with the other questions, hope this helps.
