HDD Test result: Completed: read failure.

Post by bramschats »

Hello,

I have a new TS459+ and 4 new harddisks WDC WD20EARS-00MVWB050.0.

When i do a complete test i get the result discribed beneath. The other 3 drives work perfectly, is this drive defect or is there another problem?

Code: Select all

 Date/Time: 2010/09/07 11:55:37
 Level: Error
[HDD SMART] HDD 4 Full Test result: Completed: read failure.

This is the smart information:

Code: Select all

Going to try it using a WD test program, let you know my findings.

I was running the extended test for about half an hour and then a popup screen with error message, can not continue, to many bad sectors, i guess this is not just bad format but a bad disk, isn't it?

I have 2 more unopened WD20EARS disks and i actually want to change them for other disks, does someone have an idea which to buy and can i use multiple brand harddisks in a raid configuration?

thanks in advance.

Hi there!

I just encountered the exact same problem and immediately called my original vendor. He explained the reason for the "NORMAL" status:
If you look in the SMART table, you find two important lines:

5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 200 200 140 0 OK
The second-to-last column shows that you have no reallocated sectors on the disk yet: That's a good sign.

197 Current_Pending_Sector 200 200 000 1 OK
The second-to-last column shows that you have one pending sector: That's the problem.

As far as I understand, this pending sector needs to be reallocated, but this was not yet done by the system. So if your RAID will try to use this sector, the worst case scenario is that it will drop this disk from the RAID then. You will not (yet) lose any data, as that's what RAID is there for.

So keep an eye out for those two lines on all your disks. If any of those two numbers increase or seem to be already unusually high, get a replacement for that disk and let the RAID do the rest.

If anyone with a deeper understanding of this error is around here, I would be quite happy to get some more background or recommendations on how to deal with this problem!

Thanks & Cheers,

Thanks for your message oliver,

I have exactly the same results of the smart test on my setup (TS-251 with 2 WD Red in RAID0)

Unfortunately, I've no more information to provide.

I will keep an eye on!

Cheers
