TS-101: cannot use external disk

Post by Likkmm »

G'day,

Problem: I've never been able to successfully attach an external disk to my TS-101

I purchased my TS-101 on 19. May 2007 and have been daunted in my efforts to
get some sort of external backup off of it. I have tried both USB and eSATA connections.
I've tried different hard disk enclosures. I've tried different hard disks (same model
though.) I've tried attaching both options "Data Sharing" and "Q-RAID 1." I've
formatted the external disks multiple times with the TS-101. Of course I've stopped
and started the system multiple times. I've upgraded the firmware once (but just
discovered there's a later version out.) The system recognizes that the disks have
been attached, but I can never get to the point that I can actually use the disk.
Now I discovered this forum, searched it unsuccessfully for assistance to my specific
problem and thought I'd throw this question out.

Question: Is there anywhere I can look to find out more detail on what the issue is?
I have the telnet firmware version installed.

Thanks for any tips.

James

Done. Thanks.

(The form was a bit obtuse - allowed data length was too small for some fields.)

A follow up:

Following instructions were received from QNAP support:
Please delete the used external disk partition then apply Q-RADI 1 again.
Use Start->Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Computer Management->Disk Management from Windows to delete all existing partitions.
Marking a note of Q-RAID 1 you did before, if you still have question please do not hesitate to contact us.

I presumed that meant:
  • "Eject now..." the external disk from my QNAP
Attach it to a MS-Windows system (attached via USB 2.0 to the nearest - a WIN2000 machine)
Use the MS-Windows tool to delete the partitions (deleted the 4 partitions present successfully)
Unmount the external drive from the MS-Windows system and attach it once again to the QNAP (attached to the eSATA port)
At this point the QNAP started syncing again automatically. Q-RAID 1 was set. No chance to reformat. The sync was yet again unsuccessful. I tried hooking the external disk up to the QNAP's USB 2.0 port, with no luck ("Data Sharing" and not "Q-RAID 1" of course.) Then, with the drive connected to the eSATA port, I was able to click the "Data Sharing" option on and happened to click "Apply." After displaying a alert box, this started the formatting - NOT the "Format now..." button. (THIS was probably my biggest confusion.) After the formatting completed, the drive was accessible as a share.

One of my goals has been achieved - attaching an external disk as a share. Now I'm backing up my QNAP via a second machine a share at a time. (I gave "Remote replication" a shot, but must not have gotten the right parameters, as the QNAP refused to replicate to another share on itself.) I'll see what happens when I reboot.

I'd also like to have the RAID going simultaneously. I'll move the "Data Sharing" disk over to the USB 2.0 port and try to get a second external disk running on the eSATA port under Q-RAID.

For some reason a fresh disk didn't work the first time around on the second sync. Not sure what happened there - it's been a while.

Code: Select all
