HDD sequence mix up, RAID 5 - does it matter?

Post by bugfunk »

My trusted assistant was a little too over excited and forgot to label the hdd's with their slot numbers as they were removed.

Does the order that I put them back have any risk associated? If so, any suggestions on how to find the correct sequence, or associated metadata, would be much well received.

Many thanks

The Trays themselves are probably already numbered anyway.

As for whether it matters or not, really depends on the Firmware version installed on the NAS.

Thanks for replying Patrick.

On this Firmware it probably doesn't matter.

Hi. I just had the same mistake myself. Just purchased the TVS871T yesterday, finished the RAID5 setup for 8x4TB drives, copy and organized all my data in it, and after that, for some reason had to shut down and eject every disks, take a picture (for the media) of disks working in perfect condition. After everything is done and its time for me to put them back, the big Uh Oh moment started... i should have labeled each and every single one of them properly. So I googled and landed here. Somehow I've had none of the options available on the internet working to solve my issue. A little help from the masters, please?

So have you tried a sequence then?

What error did you get?

Visit:

You need to remove the unofficial from the beginning of the link in order for it to work.

BTW, why are you using RAID5 with 8 disks? That is a disaster waiting to happen. You should be using RAID6.

IMHO, start from scratch and build using RAID6. Wipe all of the partition tables before rebuilding.
