Small update: Since upgrading to QTS 4.3, SMB so far works flawlessly. I can run the same VMs over SMB that previously only worked under AFP, connection time is near-instant. Seems pretty solid all round. So it seems there was something wonky in QTS 4.2

Happy to report after upgrading to High Sierra, the mount time issue is gone! Yup, back to instant mount as it was under Snow Leopard. Transfer rates under SMB3 are a sustained 107mb/s read/write.
