Random CIFS/SMB drop outs

Post by Slackness »

As per the title:

I get random dropouts via cabled 1Gb ethernet with CIFS/SMB on MAC, Linux & Windows.

No, scheduled reboots, Only plex running, have FTP enabled but not used much.
This is about as minimal as you can get on the unit.

The unit is a TS653A with 6 WD Drives.

Unit --> HP Procurve 1GB switch --> HP DL380 Vers 7 running VMWare
--> Draytek WIFI router with 1Gb connection.

No errors on the managed switch to show packet dropout.

Mix of MACs, Linux, Android and Windows clients.

Any help appreciated.

Current firmware version:4.3.3.0154

Thanks

Slackness.

Can you describe the "random dropouts" a little bit better please?

What is the max SMB protocol configured on your NAS? Check either the WIn/Mac/NFS section -> Windows Networking -> Advanced, or run # smb2status

[~] # smb2status

smbd (samba daemon) Version 4.4.9
smbd (samba daemon) is running.
max protocol SMB 3.0 enabled.

Any port trunking, Jumbo Frames or the like in the game?

I have a similar problem to others in the forums. The problem is that a samba share from my QNAP nas becomes inaccessible after some random period of time. I have read a number of forum posts on this topic (both on the linux side and the QNAP side), but they don't seem to match.

Here are the details:
QNAP TS-453 Pro, recent upgrade to 4.3.3.0154

Client:
Ubuntu 16.04
cifs version 6.4

There are 5 shares that are mounted automatically in fstab. They have all worked for over 2 years without issue. The issues described below only started after the NAS was updated to firmware 4.3.3.0154 from 4.1.something. Here is the fstab line for the one of the shares:

Code: Select all

//192.168.1.80/CBE_Admin /media/bob/CBE_Admin cifs _netdev,iocharset=utf8,credentials=/home/bob/.smbcredentials,uid=1000,vers=3.0 0
The issue:
Intermittently, one or more of the mount points from the one NAS are unavailable. The error occurs when trying to access the share. For example, ls on the share returns:

Code: Select all

ls: cannot access '/media/bob/CBE_Admin': Host is down
Interestingly, one or more of the 5 shares are still available and can be accessed without issue. I have not had all five shares down at the same time.
If I leave everything alone, after some random period of time, the share may become accessible again. It seems to be random.

I have not been able to find anything out of the sorts in any of the logs on the ubuntu box.

Based on previous posts from Kurt, I have verified the following on the NAS:

Code: Select all

[~] # smb2status

smbd (samba daemon) Version 4.4.9
smbd (samba daemon) is running.
max protocol SMB 3.0 enabled.
I'm not sure what is going on here.

I can "fix" the problem by rebooting the ubuntu machine or by unmounting and remounting the share as root.

Any help would be appreciated.

Ensure you update the NAS to QTS 4.3.3.0174 (available from the manual download in case - qnap.com -> Support -> Download.

Hi,

Did you look at /etc/config/smb.conf ?
I see there is a deadtime parameters.
In samba documentation : The value of the parameter (a decimal integer) represents the number of minutes of inactivity before a connection is considered dead, and it is disconnected. The deadtime only takes effect if the number of open files is zero.

Hope it helps,
