AFP vs SMB on 10Gbe Network
Hi everyone,
I'm setting up a 10Gbe Network in my photography studio but I'm having different speed performance between AFP and SMB connection.
That's my network setup:
- Mac Pro with Akitio 10Gbe Thundebolt adapter, Mac OS Sierra 10.12.6
- Netgear XS716E - ProSAFE 16-Port 10-Gigabit Ethernet Web Managed Switch
- QNAP TS-1685 firmware 4.3.3.0238 Build 20170703 with 10 HDD array RAID 0
With AFP connection I'm getting 550MB/s write speed and 1000 MB/s
but I would like to use SMB connection because one of the software I use daily (Capture One 10) has issues with AFP connections.
The problem is that with SMB connection I'm getting slow write speed, it drops to 145 MB/s (read speed is ok).
SMB connection is 3.02, I've deactivated SMB signing via Terminal (with signing ON write speed is 65 MB/s and read speed 100MB/s).
JUMBO frame are activated (9000) on the network interface (akitio) and on the NAS, I couldn't find the option on the Netgear XS716E (wich supports them) I think is enabled by default.
Any ideas how to solve this problem?
Best regards,
Filippo

I've tried on MAC OS 10.11 and I'm getting 320MB/s write speed and read speed on 280 MB/s, same configuration.

Have you disabled SMB packet signing? That will cause BIG performance issues with SMB.

Have you opened a helpdesk ticket with QNAP? What QTS version and build are you using? What make/model hard drive are you using and are they on QNAP's compatibility list?

Try fresh installing the latest macOS. That solved slow smb writes for me.

Re: AFP vs SMB on 10Gbe Network
Hi There, Did you ever resolve this write speed issue.
I am having exactly the same
AFP Write : 600MB/s, Read : 900MB/s
SMB Write : 150 MB/s, Read : 1040MB/s
This is with Jumbo Frames, Disbaled SMB Packet Signalling, I think I've tried everything.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I was hoping there might be another option. Thanks though.

Re: AFP vs SMB on 10Gbe Network
Hi Just as an update, in case anyone else stumbles across this page. My issue was actually down to the 10GBe card in my Mac.
My setup was a Mac 4,1 Tower running High Sierra
I was originally running a StarTech ST10000SPEX card, and with this, I could get these speeds. Even with signing disabled.
AFP: 900MB/s, Read & 600MB/s Write, But I need SMB or NFS or FCPX
SMB: 1040MB/s Read & only 150 MB/s Write (It was maxing out at 150MB/s)
NFS: 760MB/s Read & Only 150 MB/s Write (Again maxing out at 150 MB/s)
I switched the card to the Sonnet Presto, and keeping exactly the same settings are now getting
SMB: 1060MB/s Read and a proper 845MB/s Write. Took me 2 days to figure out where the issue was though !!!

Re: AFP vs SMB on 10Gbe Network
people have purchased the StarTech card because it is simply the cheapest card they can find. That's all that seems to matter to many people.
The Sonnet Presto 10Gbase-T card works wonderfully, and has solved your issue. Other PCIe cards for Mac that work are ATTO NT11 and NT12, and Small Tree
10G PCIe cards which are Intel X540 cards with the correct driver (no you just can't buy the Intel X540 from eBay and load in the Small tree driver).
The new QNAP single port 10G PCIe card get's it drivers from Aquantia - and there are only Windows and Linux drivers available for this. Same applies to the
ASUS 10G NIC card, which is an Aquantia chip - no Mac drivers. So at this moment, if price is the only issue - get the Sonnet Presto 10Gbase-T card, not the StarTech.
And as Trexx said - don't forget to disable SMB signing, because even if you buy a brand new iMac Pro with the native 10G port, you still get terrible SMB speeds unless you disable SMB signing.

Re: AFP vs SMB on 10Gbe Network
I have same issue that SMB Write : 89 MB/s, Read : 1000MB/s compared to AFP around 600MB/s at write.
However, I have found a solution that if you disable the WS-Discovery first and then re-enable again by choosing highest version is SMB3 and Lowest version is SMB2.1,
and then the SMB speed is back to Write: 760 MB/s, Read: 1000MB /s !!!
I have changed nothing on my hardware setting, just switch on/off the WS-Discovery option, and the speed of SMB is fixed. I am using QTS 4.3.6.0895.
However, if your 10gb connection got lost or disconnected or put in to sleep mode, then somehow the speed of SMB would be reset back to slow one, but you can try to switch WS-Discovery option once again.
Anybody wants to try?
