Slow copy speeds over WiFi
Hi
I have a problem in which I get really slow copy speeds over WiFi.
For some reason sending files to the NAS is worse than sending files to the computer.
(See the screenshot, where I get 2MB/sec to NAS and 3MB/sec to mac.
Settings are as per the screenshots below:
The USB unit is a Netis WF2120 150 Mbps Wireless N Nano USB Adapter
What do you smart peeps think is wrong here?

Re: Slow copy speeds over WiFi
components involved ?
nas connected to wifi router first ?(wifi connection via router)
wifi dongles connected to the nas should be avoided at all costs

Yes, the NAS is connected to the WiFi via the router, as is the computer.
So, if not a WiFi dongle, then what?

Re: Slow copy speeds over WiFi
so if the nas is connected via lan to the wifi router..then where does the mentioned dongle come into play ?

if the nas is connected via lan cable to the router, then it is already on wifi
no need for a wifi dongle
no need for a wifi dongle

Re: Slow copy speeds over WiFi
no, you asked how the NAS is connected to the router, and, as I said, it is via the WiFi.
There are no cables involved in this.
Just the NAS, computer (s), and all devices to a common router/hub.

Re: Slow copy speeds over WiFi
So, connect the NAS (with a wire) to its own access point, and connect that over WiFi to the rest of the network?
Why are the dongle's bad? Just bad, or bad for NAS?
I wish QNAP would have said this on their website before the sale. I ended up buying two USB dongles (first does not work, as the manufacturer updated the firmware; something I could not check when buying it) and now have to buy an access point anyway.

Re: Slow copy speeds over WiFi
wifi bridges...some repeaters have that feature too ..
dongles have much smaller antennas then dedicated access points or brdiges..and the dongle is buried behind your metal nas...wifi is on top a nad idea for a nas..period ..bad and unpredictable transmission speed and stability
why dont you just put the nas next to your wifi router...problem solved

Re: Slow copy speeds over WiFi
I may just do that. The idea was to hide the NAS away in a cabinet so that it is hidden away, but I may just get a cabinet to put both the WiFi router and the NAS into

Re: Slow copy speeds over WiFi
You can't trust product marketing to tell you what options are good and what are not very good. They just list all features and possibilities and will never mention weaknesses. That apply to almost all manufacturers, not just Qnap.ratchet_spanner wrote: ↑Mon Jan 13, 2020 4:11 am I wish QNAP would have said this on their website before the sale.
In this user community Qnap customers will tell other Qnap customers what features are good for what.
WifI on mobile devices is great because it's the only way to connect them to the network without sacrificing their mobility. Wifi on stationary equipment is generally not good and to use Wifi on a NAS/server is a disaster for performance.
Always use network cables whenever possible and Wifi only when there are no other alternatives.
Make sure that it's well ventilated and keep an eye on temperature inside the cabinet....but I may just get a cabinet to put both the WiFi router and the NAS into
RAID have never ever been a replacement for backups. Without backups on a different system (preferably placed at another site), you will eventually lose data!
A non-RAID configuration (including RAID 0, which isn't really RAID) with a backup on a separate media protects your data far better than any RAID-volume without backup.
All data storage consists of both the primary storage and the backups. It's your money and your data, spend the storage budget wisely or pay with your data!

Re: Slow copy speeds over WiFi
Wifi has so many issues - that discussion does not really belong in this Mac forum.
If you only have Macs connecting to your Qnap, you can:
- uncheck Local Master Browser, Enable WS-Discovery
- check Enable Asynchronous I/O (which may help your speeds)
- Lowest SMB version SMB2
Note that Allow symbolic links between different shared folders can be a security risks if you have other users on your network (they can link to your "home" folder)
