I can only seem to back up using AFP and not SMB.

Any news about that?
How did you get it running with AFP?
I have a new TS-453D running 4.5.1.1540 running. I tried both as by manual with a folder created myself and HBS 3.
The share is shown in Time Machine password and user accepted, but it finally does not connect.
It is really a mess on my old 251+ everything was working and my new 453D has already grabbed more of my time then the old in several years.

Mount the share using aft://{NAS IP}/{share name}
But I spoke too soon, it's still not working properly. Restarting the smb service on the NAS seems to fix it temporarily.

hlpbob007's solution finally worked for me. Some further minor notes:
- Trying to mount the share first via Finder caused Time Machine not to work
- At some point I could see the share as double in Time Machine preferences. The one ending with "(TimeMachine).local" worked, the other one not.

After updateing to QTS 4.5.3.1652 Build 20210428 with the latest HBS, issue seems to be resolved. I was able to log in with the TimeMachine user to the QNAP NAS and do the first backup. Need more test, but the problem seems to be solved.
