Mounting shares as drives for OneDrive

Post by bokr71 »

Hi,

I am trying to setup Microsoft OneDrive, and it keeps wanting me to make the OneDrive folder on a "fixed" drive on my Mac Pro. If I do, it works fine. However, I really want to have the OneDrive folder on my NAS, but Microsoft prevents me from doing that saying that the OneDrive folder has to reside on a directly attached storage media. A NAS share mounted using SMB or AFP is not that.

Is there way to "mount" the shares on my NAS so they do not look like network shared folders? I thought QNAP was pretty much a DAS/NAS solution, and that should be possible... Of course I would like to continue using Thunderbolt as the connection...

By the same reasoning you could say that QNAP is a display monitor because Thunderbolt can be used to hook up a computer to a monitor...

Which QNAP product are using? Since you mentioned using NAS shares mounted using SMB or AFP, I'm assuming this is a NAS. A NAS is a Network Attached Storage, not a DAS.

Thunderbolt is a peripheral interconnect standard that can carry various types of signals and protocols. In your case, it's used to connect your Mac to the NAS for TCP/IP networking between the two, not for direct disk I/O. So it's not possible to "mount" the shares from the NAS as if they were disks directly attached to your Mac.
Is there way to "mount" the shares on my NAS so they do not look like network shared folders?
You're looking at the problem from the wrong perspective. Instead of trying to fit a square peg in a round hole, make your NAS directly sync with OneDrive, without going through your Mac.

Take a look at QNAP HybridMount. I believe this should accomplish what you want, that is to have the OneDrive folder on the NAS.

I have the TVS-872XT and I don’t think it is asking for too much, seeing as it is literally being advertised as the “QNAP TVS-872XT-I5-16G SAN/NAS/DAS Storage System”. I now it is primarily a NAS, but seeing as it is also a DAS (at least advertised as such), I was hoping that it would be possible to mount the shares as drives - and that I just haven’t figured out how.

I will take a look at HybridMount, and see what I could get from that setup. Thx for the suggestion...

There must have been a misunderstanding or a lie in advertising somewhere... This unit is definitely not a DAS and cannot be used as such no matter how hard you try.

To prove your point, can you point to a page or document online where QNAP advertises TVS-872XT as a DAS? From QNAP themselves. Not from a 3rd-party like a reseller, reviewer or end-user, those don't count.

You are probably right, but everywhere this unit is advertised, Amazon, BHPhoto, Newegg, DirectDial, even QNAPDirect, advertise this as a SAN/NAS/DAS device. It may be marketing hyperbole, but the common user wouldn’t necessarily know that, especially not when you then add that the connection between the Mac Pro and the QNAP is ThunderBolt.

Please tell me where you see QNAPDirect advertise this model as a SAN/NAS/DAS device. https://qnapdirect.com/products/qnap-tv ... skless-nas

QNAPDirect is just another reseller, by the way.

I'm sorry that you were possibly mislead by a vendor, but at the same time I can't shake off the feeling that your claims are a bit disingenuous.

I looked for the QNAPDirect reference, and right can't find it, but here you go, there are plenty of others, and they make reference to the DAS capabilities.

I am NOT saying that QNAP said so, I am saying that as an average consumer I go with what resellers are telling me, as I am not buying the unit from QNAP.

https://www.directdial.com/ca/item/qnap ... -i5-16g-us

https://www.softwarecity.ca/item/TVS-87 ... 6G-US.html

Finally, I am not being disingenuous - why would I? - I was originally just trying to find out how to mount folder so they presented as drives, rather than shares, nothing more... I don't understand why you are taking it as an attack on QNAP.

The business model for cloud suppliers is not always aligned with that of NAS manufacturers. Hence all the dancing around.

All right, fair enough. My apologies for casting aspersions. I'm not here to defend QNAP, I'm here to help other users. But I think unfounded or irrational complaints about the product are counter-productive. And I found your story hard to believe. I can't understand how it's possible to make a purchasing decision based on a one-line description from some unknown online shops, that's a pretty big chunk of money to spend.

So anyway, have you tried QNAP HybridMount?

I was one of the first in here that got the TVS-872XT in the wild, and have actually been using it since 2018. I have always been very impressed with the performance, having transfer speeds in the 1’000-1’100 MB/Sec. region, and the purchasing decision was never based on anything but stability, speed, and the Thunderbolt functionality (I actually do not have a 10Gb network). And, I apparently have not had the need of the shares being recognized as mounted drives, until now that I want to use OneDrive.

Thus far failing to see how HybridMount will help me, I haven’t starting using it, but I will give it a go this weekend...

BTW - @Mousetick - you were absolutely right! HybridMount is doing exactly what I wanted to do... THX for the suggestion!

Cool. Seeing your other thread it looks like it's more complicated to set up on the NAS than I had expected. I don't use HybridMount myself. I was merely suggesting it.

If your OneDrive is not overly large, and you're the only person using it on one or two computers, you might be better off storing it on a local disk on each computer. HybridMount may not be worth the hassle. I don't know. Just a thought.

It actually works just like I would like, and resizing the Volume is just to make more space in the Pool (where HybridMounts is storing data).

Now if I could just figure out how to make iCloud sync the same way:)
