NIC speed - 10Ge ethernet connection starts up slow

Post by greghuson »

TVS 872XT used to serve two systems for video editing. Not connected to the internet.

Running the qnap 10gig e card in my 2010 Mac Pros - current issue is on a system running high sierra, straight connection, no switch

Whenever I boot or reboot my Mac, the NIC card connects at a slow speed - even though the hardware setting is manual/10GbaseT / full duplex / jumbo

If I change the IP address of the connection, then it starts running at full speed (well, as fast as those drives will go.)

Not using DHCP.

This is new- and while I've had a few hardware issues, requiring reseating cards, I haven't changed any software lately.

Any clues why this might be happening? I'm an IT dullard, so speak slowly and use small words.

Thanks in advance for any tips.

You have no switch.
Your TVS-872XT has one 10G port - ethernet 1. Did you add a second 10G card, or replace the existing card with a dual port card ?
Make QNAP Ethernet port 1 (the 10G port) 192.168.2.3 255.255.255.0 MTU 9000). Make your 2010 Mac 10G port 192.168.2.11 255.255.255.0 MTU 9000).
GO > Connect To Server> smb://192.168.2.3
That's it. Your 2010 Mac's are old - I don't care if they are running Catalina or not. (is your 10G card a QXG-10G1T from QNAP in the Mac Pro's, or an older Sonnet Presto 10G ?).

With a newer Mac and a thunderbolt 3 to 10G adapter (like a QNAP QNA-T310G1T) or a native 10G port like in a 2020 iMac, you will be getting 800 MB/sec.

What firmware are you running on your TVS-872XT ?

and by the way - Hi Greg -

I just priced this out for you - 2020 iMac
https://www.apple.com/shop/buy-mac/imac ... 0ghz-512gb#
with the good AMD Radeon 5700 XT, 64 Gig of RAM, and the 10G native ethernet port - cost is $3899.
Throw that 2010 Mac Pro in the trash.

Thanks Bob, I'll try all those settings and eventually check out your recommended replacement imac, too. I'm using the cheese graters because I can still run my nvidia cards for Resolve- that's why I'm still on High Sierra on one machine too. If i ever DO buy a new machine, I'm leaning toward a PC...

I have a second qnap NIC card in the server for the second bay, but that machine is rarely even turned on. Both mac pros have the qnap brand nic. My 'main' mac is connected to the native 10ge port. These recommended settings are different than how we originally set up the system, but should work equally well. I don't see how that will fix the problem, but I'm game to try it as soon as I get this morning's review copy posted!

Firmware int eh Qnap is 4.4.0.0931

Also, I've been using afp because I'm running mimiq and that's what they recommended. Is that an issue? (other than the fact it doesn't exist beyond mojave.) Everything works fine as it was originally configured, it just runs real slow after boot up - like it's defaulting to 1g (or even 100?) which only recently started happening. (I wonder if maybe I put the NIC in the wrong slot or something- I had a hardware problem with the mac a few months ago, probably because of salt air, and had to pull all my cards, clean connections, and reseat them.) After 'tickling' the NIC in the mac by changing the IP, it runs at 400+ Mb/s, which is plenty for me. You'll recall I used 5400RPM drives.

Now I am confused.
the QNAP card uses the Aquantia AQC-107 10G chip, which is the same chip that Apple uses in all their products now. The driver is built into the MacOS. I actually forgot if the AQC-107 works with
OS X 10.13.6, or if it needed the later operating system. It must be 10.13.6, because I think Apple became a hard ** when 10.14 came out - because they no longer wanted to support NVidia.

You should update your firmware. QTS 4.5.2 works perfectly fine. I forgot that you had 5400 RPM drives (a no no back then, and even now - when it comes to speed).
All the slots in the old Mac Pro's are "good" slots, because they are all at least x4 lane slots.

For PC's - Puget Systems up in Seattle is just great ! And of course, they can come with NVidia cards (like the RTX 2080ti) and still cost less than the loaded iMac. But the iMac is good too.
Indiestor Mimiq is being forced to move to SMB with AVID, because Big Sur doesn't really support AFP (although AFP still works) - it's like saying "don't use FCP 7 anymore" - and everyone did it, and then they all got screwed. Time to move to SMB.

SO - in summary - update your firmware, and try doing speed tests with SMB !

Do NOT apply this if your ONLY NW connection is the 10Gb NIC cards as you WILL lose access to your QNAP during this flash and will either have to reboot from the box (if possible) or do a hard shutdown.

QNAP of course does not provide any warning of such thing occurring prior to flashing the NIC.
