Renaming 10G Ethernet interface

Post by bokr71 »

I am mounting my NAS shares on the masOS (Big Sur) desktop, and the NAS only turns up as the IP address in the Finder under Locations. How do I change that name - is it even possible?

Right now the NAS is name "20.0.20.20" (The IP I am assigning it in Network settings). I have all 3 interfaces live; Gigabit Ethernet, 10G Ethernet, and Thunderbolt. For some reason the Gigabit Ethernet and the Thunderbolt, both show up in Network with the name I have defined on my NAS, but not the 10G Ethernet one. The 10G Ethernet card is a Sonnet Solo10G PCIe card in my Sonnet Echo Express box connected to my Mac Pro.

I don't know if/how it works on mac, but make sure the Servername (in system>general) is set and the local DNS server has the name in it (manual added if possible or via Network&File Services>Win/Mac/NFS>Microsoft Networking>Advanced option>register in DNS)

Yep - I did that, and that's probably why it shows up correctly for my Gigabit Ethernet and Thunderbolt connections - just not my 10GbE connection.

I have a 10GbE on my 853BU and 951X and both show up fine via device name (but I don't have a mac to test)

OK - I should have been more clear...

In my setup the connection is as follows:

NAS 10GbE -> via Ethernet -> Solo10G PCIe card in Echo Express box -> via Thunderbolt -> Mac Pro

On the Mac Pro I see the interface as "Thunderbolt Ethernet Slot 2", and I here configure fixed IP addresses to match with the ones in the NAS.

@Bob Zelin - do you have any suggestions?

you are crazy for not leaving it with the IP address for connection. I don't know why you want to just have a "name". When you see 20.0.20.20, you know that this is your 10G port.
Apple computers try to make connecting to network devices "easy" - so that things just connect (thanks to Bonjour) - but they don't care if it's WiFi, or 1G (or now 10G with your Solo 10G) - the goal of Apple is
to make things easy for customers that don't want to understand anything.

I get that, but YOU are in a situation where you MUST connect to a specific port - and you know that 20.0.20.20 is the 10G port - and that smb://bokr71QNAP could be anything. Leave it alone. Because if you succeed,
you will write back and say next month "my connection from my Mac to my QNAP is SO SLOW - I am only getting 100 MB/sec, and I own a Sonnet Solo 10G, and it's connecting to the 10G port in my QNAP".
And I will ask you, "exactly what are you connecting to - are you connecting with GO> Connect To Server> smb://20.0.20.20" - and you will write back, and say "no, I am just clicking on bokr71QNAP in the sidebar".
And then I will start to yell at you.

Enter the damn number - when you click on GO> Connect To Server - you can save it right there in that dialog ! And if you don't want to click on GO> Connect To Server, you can click on COMMAND-K.
And if that's too much trouble, you can go into your System Preferences, Users> LogIn Items, and put the QNAP that you mounted (the way I described) right in the Login items so that when you turn on your Mac, it will
auto mount to the correct IP address - and then you don't have to deal with any of this.

Thank for the explanation and suggestions Bob. I knew you knew what I was talking about.

I have OCD and it is just one of those things I can't explain...
