SMB3 Issues after Qnap ARM->Intel switch?!

Post by Rello »

Hello all,

after 1 day of testing, I am lost.
I migrated from A TS-231P (ARM) to a TS-253A (Intel Cel.).
Putting the disks in, starting up, all nice and good.

But I cant connect via SMB3 from macOS anymore?!
  • Raspi or IP cam => Share ✅
  • macOS (old and current version) => Share ❌
  • manually setting the SMB-version to 2 on macOS ✅
  • putting the disks 1:1 back in the old Qnap ✅
  • activating AFP and connecting with macOS ✅
- in Qnap, the SMB versions are set v1 to v3 (IP cams still need the old v1)
- I reset /etc/config/smb.conf with the default config without success
- I reset all settings of the Qnap without success

do you have any other hint?
As other devices can connect and AFP also connects, a hardware or connection issue does not make sense to me.

Any idea appreciated

...keeping macOS on SMBv2 is not an option because Timemachine does not work then...

Actually MacOS does very well with SMB2 (note that "SMB3" is actually a suite of dialects of the SMB2 protocol). Apple does not specify which version of SMB works with TM ( https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-hel ... h15139/mac ), but Apple's extensions to the SMB protocol require SMB2 or higher. https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Config ... h_Mac_OS_X
As to OP's issue, I suggest:
- disable AFP - Big Sur (and maybe earlier?) does not officially support it anymore and Macs appear to get confused if both are enabled
- enable SMB2 (min) and SMB3 (max)
- enable Bonjour - Samba (and not AFP)
- mount the NAS from Finder > Go > Connect to server using the format smb://User@NAS where the User is the user on the NAS.
- if all fails, install Wireshark https://www.wireshark.org/ on a Mac, try to connect to your NAS, then filter on smb2 traffic

Hi,
thank you for the reply.

I continued testing.
I switched the disk back to the old qnap to remain working.
Then I took a blank disk and comletely initialized the new Qnap from scratch.
Tada - SMB3 is working as expected.

conclusion: there seems to be some kind of config which does not work when taking over between the devices.
So now I am copying the data to the new. not as nice as switching the disks, but ok
