Firmware 5.0.0.1808 kills access speed on MacOS 11.4

Post by marchdigital »

I just updated my firmware to 5.0.0.1808 on one of my TS-453BT3 NAS's and now the read/write speeds are so slow the NAS is rendered useless. After reading the release notes it appears QNAP states that Thunberbolt 3 speeds may be reduced in the firmware - but the reduction in speed is so bad I am now unable to use the NAS for it's intended purpose (video editing with FCPX). Is QNAP going to address this issue or expect Apple to update it's drivers as indicated in the firmwares release notes?

I don't hold out much hope of Apple doing anything to fix QNAP's product issues - I hope QNAP is proactively addressing it. Thankfully, I have two TS-453BT3's and did not update the firmware on my main NAS - but it is very disappointing to see that QNAP chose the release this firmware knowing that it essentially cripples your NAS in the process if you use Mac OS 11.3 or above (which I suspect would be most people).

Is there any other workaround available?

*** Update - I was able to downgrade the firmware back to v4.5.4 and this fixed my speed issue. ***

Was it just Thunderbolt speed that was affected? Or also normal ethernet LAN speed?
How easy was it to downgrade?
Debating whether to try it out on my TS-451....

Hi Marchdigital -
thank you for posting this. You are the first person I know who is doing video editing that has updated to QTS 5.0. I am glad you were able to back rev to QTS 4.5.4.
I would have been curious to see how the 10G port reacted to QTS 5.0. I don't know if you own a thunderbolt 3 to 10G adapter for your Mac.

I believe it was just the Thunderbolt connection that was slow as I don't connect to the NAS over ethernet generally. The downgrade worked fine - I just downloaded the older firmware and installed it as per the instructions here: https://www.qnap.com/en-us/how-to/knowl ... e-firmware

Hi Bob,

I don't have a T3 to 10G adaptor - I just use T3 to directly connect to both of NAS's .. but from what the release notes for v5 states I believe the issue is only related to the T3 port and not ethernet. I would stay clear of the v5 upgrade for now if you're using it for video editing in FCPX ... trying to open a library from the NAS with v5 installed was not happening. I did a Blackmagic disk speed on it with v5 installed and it returned zero - literally not a single green tick anywhere. I did the exact same test on my second NAS running v4 and it worked as expected - super fast read/write speeds over T3.

It still baffles me why QNAP would release this firmware knowing that it essentially cripples the device for Mac users - I imagine there must be a lot of FCPX editors using these NAS's due to the T3 interface. It's frustrating that I'll now need to closely monitor these forums to see if a future firmware update will address this so I can safely upgrade again.

Do you know if the problem is only with intel or with m1 chip as well?

Which build of 4.5.4 did you use to downgrade. I am facing the same issue and would really appreciate the help.
Thank you.

I have a similar issue, but with 5.0.0.1828 and MacOS 12.0.1 Monterey (but maybe it's just pulled over from the prior MacOS). Anyway, I was told by QNAP support that I needed to pull my two SSD cache sticks before downgrading to 4.5. Anyone else have to do that? I'm running a TVS-672XT.

Known Issues:
Thunderbolt write speeds are lower than expected in QTS 5.0.0. Note: Due to Thunderbolt driver compatibility issues, if you are using macOS 11/12 devices with Intel processors, we do not recommend updating QTS to 5.0.0 for the time being.

Got the same issue on a MacBook Pro late 2015.
I'm downgrading right now.

I have the same issue with this Version 4.5.4.1892 and my M1 Mac and Big Sur.
Have you found a solution for this already?
I contacted the QNAP-Support and they meant it could be an issue with the Thunderbolt-Subsystem(TB-Card or Cable).

I immediately changed the cable to check it.
In Speed-Test it looks OK (Disk Speed Test by Blackmagicdesign: 250-350 MB) Write Speed, but when I try to copy Files to the NAS it drops Speed very fast.

TVS-472XT, 4TB RAM, 4 x 4TB IronWolf HDD, QNAP Qfinder Pro 7.4.2. Firmware 5.0.0.1858
Running an iMac Pro 3Ghz 10-Core Intel Xeon W, 64 GB 2666 MHz DDR4. Monterey 12.2.1
Had the slow TB speed problem from day one. Tried many "solutions" from many websites.Never solved it. Any real solution would be appreciated.
