How to simply access the NAS remotely

Post by billpage17 »

I have a TS-869L (latest firmware) - connected to a Virgin Superhub router. I also have a Mac Pro connected directly to the Virgin hub.

I can access the NAS drive when I am on site, on both the Mac Pro and wirelessly on my Macbook air. However, whenever I am out of the office and try and connect I just cannot.

I have no experience with this type of setup, so purchased the NAS, as it stated that I could connect remotely with ease, without needing to be an IT specialist.

If I try and access the NAS IP address, http://192.168.0.2 when I am away from the office the page just fails to open.

I appreciate the fact that this is probably a simple thing for you guys to do, so I do feel a little stupid not being able to remotely access my NAS. I need to be able to download, amend etc my files on the NAS when I am not in the office.

I would really appreciate some really simple (for dummies) help as to how I can do this. I have gone through the NAS user guide, but just can't find a plain talking, easy guide to do this.

Looking forward to your help.

To be able to access your NAS Remotely, you need to setup Port-Forwarding in your Router, so that you can access it remotely. Start with the basics. Setup the following in your Router:

WAN:8080 ----> 192.168.0.2:8080
WAN:8081 ----> 192.168.0.2:8081
WAN:443 ------> 192.168.0.2:443
WAN:80 --------> 192.168.0.2:80

Consider this screenshot:

Image
In this screenshot the NAS lives at 192.168.1.50, adjust to 192.168.0.2 for your setup.

Once you have this in place, you will be able to access your NAS WebUI via your WAN-IP address: http://211.78.87.227:8080/
(Assuming that your external IP address is "211.78.87.227", adjust this to reflect your external IP address. ).

If you are on a "dynamic" IP address from your ISP (Internet Service Provider), you might want to setup a DDNS (Dynamic DNS) "name" for yourself, and that you can access your NAS using the "name" rather than your external IP address which may change without your knowledge.

Check out QNAP Tutorial: Set up DDNS Service for Remote Internet Access to QNAP NAS

Note the Port Forwarding table at the bottom of this Tutorial, as it contains additional Port-Forwanding requirements for additional services on your NAS. Do NOT forward port 13131/TCP to your NAS. Telnet is insecure (plaintext password), so it should NEVER be used from outside your network.

Good luck, and Welcome to the wonderful world of owning a QNAP NAS appliance, and gaining access to it from "anywhere" on the Internet. This setup is not easy to do, but pursue it anyway, as the benefits once it is working are well worth the effort.

Once this is working you'll be able to access your NAS from "anywhere" by accessing http://yourDDNSname.dyndns.org:8080. Follow this Tutorial to get this setup.

I recommend you to use "MyCloudNAS Service."
http://docs.qnap.com/nas/en/mycloudnas_wizard.htm

The procedure is very simple. I also use the service with MacBook Air.

Thanks folks - the advice was really helpful. I did what pwilson mentioned and have been able to connect.

I didn't even know that I had to enter the WAN IP or action port forwarding.

Thanks for the help. I will try the Cloud service next.

Hi All

I think I'm having a similar problem, but can't get past the Port-Forwarding part.
I have a Netgear Router wnr2000. When I'm adding a port (ex. 8080) I can't type in the ip address of my NAS (TS-212), which is 169.254.100.100 and the error message: "This IP address should be in the same subnet as the LAN IP address." appears.
I have no idea what that means and what i should/can do. In the end what I'd like to do is access my files outside of my own network.
Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks
Patrick

Hello Patrick,

The NAS must be in the same subnet like the router LAN interface, the compute LAN interface - and connected to the same LAN. An additional direct connection between a (probably WLAN connected) computer to the NAS - the NAS default IP address you show these is leading to this impression - can't be used for this purpose.

Tell us more about your network configuration, the LAN/WLAN addresses and subnet masks of the router and PC interfaces please. Hard to provide some community assistance otherwise.

Regards,
-Kurt.

Its now 2021 I wonder if this procedure is still the best way?
I have a TS-251+ and TR-002 extension that I would like to access from a remote site. One of the requirements is to access Photos libraries stored on the TR-002 using the Photos app on the Mac.
I'm running macOS v11.4 (Big Sur) on both a MacBook Air M1, a mini M1 and an Intel MacBook Pro.
Is it easier to do now or should I follow the examples listed earlier (2013) in this thread?

marked for closure due to necroposting .. pretty sure there is more recent threads than 2013 that explain how to NOT get your files encrypted by ransomware
