I am using my QNAP TS-219 as a FileServer for backing up my digital photos, but ever since I switched from PC to Mac it has been almost impossible. Every time I copy images to a share on my QNAP the operation will only copy a few and then stop with the error: "The operation can’t be completed because the item “DSC_XXXX.JPG” is in use."
After the error, the copy operation is rolled back, and I can start over. It seems the error is not related to specific files, as it usually is different files that failes every time, and the file does not appear to be locked or anything after the copy fails.
I suspect that this could be related to some thumbnail generation, as I only have the problem on image files. Perhaps some process is reacting on file creation to do some magic, but then blocks the file copy.
I had the problem on both Mavericks and Yosemite using both SMB:// and CIFS:// protocol. It works fine if I use the Terminal to do the copy, which could indicate that its a OS X Finder problem. On the other hand, everything is working fine if I use shares on a Windows machine, which indicates that it is a QNAP problem.
My workaround right now is to use the AFP:// protocol, but that is dead slow, so I started to look around for a new NAS. But if this issue is related to QNAP, I would probably look for another brand.
Any help in resolving this issue would be very much appreciated.
Thanks for reading.

Re: Copying image files fails with "item is in use"
In absence of real information - most likely, your QNAP NAS firmware is hopelessly outdated.
Uploading on weekends daily photo sessions from ice hockey matches (some 200...500 photos per match) - direct to the Bonjour announced AFP (still preferred, can't see a performance impact) or SMB. Biggest impact is the update of the thumbnails as uploading to shared folders members of the Media Library.

Re: Copying image files fails with "item is in use"
I'm having the exact same problem as well. I'm trying to transfer a couple of MKV files from my iMac to my Qnap TS210. It gets right to the end of the transfer and then I get the error message about the item being in use, this is despite me restarting / logging out of my computer to ensure the file is definitely not in use. There seems to be no rhyme or reason for it. Some files transfer, some don't. I'm finding it worse now that I've upgraded to OS X Yosemite.
I decided to transfer the files onto a USB stick and transfer them onto my Qnap that way, however I'm now having big problems with File Station. It seems that whenever I select the items on the flash drive to be copied over to the QnaP, file station then seems to hang and won't let me access any of the folders I want to transfer into.
I don't know how to use terminal and transfer that way.
If anyone has any suggestions on how this can be fixed I'd love to hear them!
Thanks!

I have the same problem, seems to be multimedia files.
My Mac is on Yosemite 10.10.1 (developer preview) and QNAP on the latest firmware.
I FTP'd the files up in the end.

I am on a developer seed for OS X and it looks like this problem is fixed in OS 10.10.1 update.

Same symptoms here.
So this is a Mac OS X issue?

I think so. My PC's can all transfer the same file.

A bunch of winners in this thread.

Re: Copying image files fails with "item is in use"
Hi,
My model is a TS412 - Firmware 4.1.1 build 1101
I have 4x Seagate 3TB RAID 5
My MacBook is a pro-retina early 2013 connecting via 802.11n 5.8Ghz Draytek 2860 vdsl router.
I have a single 1GBit/sec network connection to the Draytek
I was running Yosemite 10.10.0 and it was broken. Seems to be large files. FTP works fine. I updated to OS X 10.10.1 Beta 1 (build 14B17) and the problem still persists. Today I updated to 10.10.1 beta 2 (build 14B23) and managed to upload a 5GB ISO file over SMB. I haven't tried AFP.
Hope this helps someone.
Chris.

Re: Copying image files fails with "item is in use"
Hi PWilson, after the monster session troubleshooting where QNAP remoted into my systems to observe my QNAP hard rebooting when copying large files over:
viewtopic.php?f=161&t=93856&start=15
And all I got was "Wait for a new firmware"
I got fed up with providing useful information when really the product should work.
Particularly when something as basic as file copying and pasting to a network share, which has been available for decades, fails.
Anyway, you want more info, here it is:
Macbook Pro 13"
Mac OSX 10.10
2.9GHz i7 processor
8GB RAM
Crucial M4 SSD
Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0xF5)
Firmware Version: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (7.15.124.12.
QNAP
TS419 PII
4.1.1 Date: 1/11/14
Draytek 2830n Router
Firmware 3.6.7.2_sb_232201
Symptoms:
When copying files over WIfi, I have tried sizes between 200MB and 5 GB, single file (or first file in copy process if multiple files are selected) fails at the very end of the copy process with the "item in use" error.
No files are copied.
I guess it is better than the whole QNAP Freezing and hard rebooting leaving me with a dirty file system as was happening before when I tried to copy and paste files!
I note one other user has a Draytek router on this thread.
Adrian.

Thanks Chris, any idea when the official 10.10.1 is coming out?

Re: Copying image files fails with "item is in use"
Not sure on a release date apple dont publish them, We're on 10.10.1 beta 2 at the moment. I would guess a couple of weeks maybe?!
I dont know what could be causing your NAS to reboot (my TS412 doesnt do that). Is there anything in the messages like a kernel panic or something?
Have you tried AFP:// ? I know its slower...

Re: Copying image files fails with "item is in use"
Hi Chris, the reboots after a file copy were fixed by a firmware update, not by me posting all the right information as PWilson suggests.
It happened using AFP as well.
To be honest, copying files over AFP and SMB has never worked well since 4.0 on the QNAP when copying from my MAC.
Unusually, from the Windows 8 VM I have on the Mac, I have no issues copying so it looks like it is not layers 1 - 4 of the OSI model causing an issue.
So it must be Apples's implementation of the SMB/AFP protocols in other words layers 5 and 7 of the OSI model.
I might be able to give Apple a break when it comes to SMB, as it was created by IBM and made into what it is now by Microsoft, but AFP is Apple's own...

Adrian,
try using CIFS:// its SMB 1.0 but it seems to work so much better!
Hope this helps.
