BitTorrent vs others

The 3rd party BitTorrent Sync app uses the P2P (peer-to-peer) protocol to synchronize an unlimited number of files (stored on the NAS) between your devices. Your data is not stored on a server in the cloud but is protected using private keys during file transmission.

Post by babuja »

Hi guys,

Base memory required just to run, memory based on number of torrents, performance based on numbers of simultaneous transfers, numbers of peers, etc, etc, etc, take your pick,

Your question is overly broad, and therefore only an overly broad answer can be given.

Are there specific questions you have?

Download station just plain sux, and will not work with some private trackers.

Personally I use transmission on my NAS. I have once NAS that is seeding more than 5500 torrents and have never had any real issues, except that adding torrents has a delay of a second or two before choosing the download location.

qbittorrent is a memory hog compared to transmission. The memory problems really become apparent once the client has more than 500 (or so) torrents.

Taxati is banned on private trackers because it is easy to spoof retain information (private trackers need accurate information) and some versions of Tixati report incorrect data transfer information, making ratio cheating easy.

Staff of private trackers are already quite busy, and dealing with cheaters takes a lot of time, one less category to deal with makes their job easier. ;)

I was only talking in terms of casual torrenting. i don't seedbox :D i'm rather casual user. maybe someone with more hardcore usage can advise you better :(

Oh, I know I am right. ;)

I have tried qbittorrent, rutorrent and transmission running on a TS-253, TS-269, TS-509, TS-569 and TS-670.

rutorrent is the fastest, but it is only fast with a low number of torrents to manage. When the number of torrents being seeded gets higher than 300 or so, the speed advantage pretty much disappears, and rutorrent becomes hard to manage after 800 or so torrents.

qbitorrent is fine and has the same speed regardless of the number of torrents being managed, but the memory use becomes a real problem after several hundred torrents are being seeded, My anemic TS-269 froze several times with qbittorrent being the culprit.

Transmission is lightweight in terms of cpu and memory resource usage, speed is the same regardless of the number of torrents managed and active. As I write this, one NAS has 92 active torrent sessions, CPU is around 1.5% and transmission is usIng just over 1 gig of ram.

so i guess thats the only option then? for that scenario
transmission docker
https://registry.hub.docker.com/r/linux ... nsmission/

or alternatively the one with openvpn integrated. but not sure you need this, if you use qvpn or vpn on your router already

I've been using QTransmission 2.94 for the last few years which has been amazingly stable and efficient running a few thousand torrents 24/7.

Also using Transmission Remote GUI or "Transgui" to manage remotely: https://github.com/transmission-remote-gui/transgui on Mac / Ubuntu / Windows and "Tremotesf" https://github.com/equeim/tremotesf-android on android

now saw a packaged version of Transmission 3 here https://qnapclub.eu/en/qpkg/976

Installed alongside 2.94 but only one daemon can run at once - it seems to accept the settings.json file from 2.94 for configuration

Until Stephane starts an official Transmission QPKG thread perhaps we can discuss the setup of version 3 here.

I have been using Transmission for years.

Works great. Extremely streamlined.

Thought I would throw that out there and risk getting roasted if I should be using something else.
