what are the problems with vpn ?
I use ipsec and openvpn on my asus..much more up to date than qnap .. and works great
I just want to access my NAS from away...

Are you not on a Synology forum now?
I have used QNAP since 2009-ish, I am far from being an expert in networking but I never really had any problems in linking with my NAS from work

I understand the frustration, but I gotta say that I haven't had any problems. I have access to the NAS via VPN, as well as the QNAP apps on my phone.. I can view videos, photos, etc..
