Help me to understand!

Post by Zmajur »

This is my first time I'm using a NAS server. I purchased TS-231p with my cloud SSL Certificate. All is working fine, but I have some question regarding https connection. Im still discovering features like qvideo, qmusic, qfile etc. What I found from User apps is Emby. I like to use Emby, because I can ascess from WAN using smartphone, android or samsung TV apps. But I like to use Emby with HTTPS connection. I total noob who trying to understand browsing forums, but not luck. Still not get it.
I really like the QNAP product and alredy thinking to take beter, stronger NAS, after i realize the benefits of this product....

Can I use myqnapcloud SSL certificate to use Emby secure connection? If I cant, what I should do? Disable myqnapcloud, buy a domain, point DDNS, new SSL certifate, reverse proxy maybe ???? Im totaly confused....
Im not Expert for SSL, QNAp or LInux and kindly asking is anybody have a good will to guide me how to establish Emby SSL connection.
Thank you...
Sorry for bad English...

The private key and the signed certificate can be found on the NAS at run-time.

No idea on how Emby does allow using these two files - some symlinks or copies might allow the usage there.

You have to figure out what's required for Emby, and then the community might be able to assist.

Emby administration require to insert path to certificate px file and type the external domain name. Thats all. Everithing I found on other forums is to make own certificate, use free or buy a new one. I alredy have certificate from qnap cloud and I dont know can I use it and how to use it.

OK. For start I manage Emby to work with SSL but on 8920 Emby default port. So in browser I must type emby.mydomain.com:8920. Later in general setings of Qnap management I change port 443 to something else also changed settings on Emby, but no luck. I cant manage Emby to work on default 443 SSL port.
For now I dont know should I make some reverse proxy or not and what config file to edit... Anybody?

Why is it so essential having Envy on the default https port?

Maybe I prefer Emby to run on 443 more than Qnap or Web services.
Why I cant (Can I?) download qnap purchased ssl lisence? I dont understand " "can be found in run-time".

Woh up relax,

Https:// anything just set up an encrypted page.

What happens when you connect to a https:// address is the browser will first look for a ssl secure socket layer cert.

This cert simply verify via a 3Rd party website that the site / page address are 100% correct and 100% safe thus ok to setup the encryption.

The myqnapcloud ssl is for your browser to verify and securely connect to your NAS desktop and setup the encryption on the fly.

You can still do a https:// connection without an ssl cert but your browser will complain about there being no ssl cert and that the connection can not be verified as 100% correct nor 100% safe, you can select to ignore this warning and setup the secure https:// connection though.

So you would https:// connect to your emby server on your nas and ignore the warning and it'll work.
you may get more warnings or an anti virus protection may block the connection even if you want it connected.

To "fix" is to buy your own ssl cert to your own emby server on your nas these aren't always cheap as you generally buy a ssl cert that lasts a month or 6 months or 12 months maybe longer, I haven't looked up prices in a long time but I'd say it'd be a few hundred dollars to get one set up if your really desperate.

I would suggest don't bother with the ssl cert and ignore the warnings or connect via normal http:// and pick a good username and password seeing as this emby server is on your nas.

Edit:
Ssl certs are mainly for businesses not to protect an emby server.

Digicert charge
$175 usd for 1 year
$157 usd for 2 years so $314 usd
$139 usd for 3 years so $420 usd

You'd pay that up front your server handles the encryption they handle the verification process.

You'd change those settings on the emby management page.
