Notification of access to links shared via Gmail

Post by Strontium00 »

Hello,

I've had a search but can't find a solution to this requirement.

I've shared a password protected folder to a colleague, using the QNAP Gmail add on: https://www.qnap.com/en/how-to/tutorial ... s-add-on//

It's working fine, but I see no activity in the system or connection logs for my TS-453A when the folder is accessed. I'm guessing this is because it's shared via the myqnapcloud service? Is there a way to monitor activity in this shared folder? A notification would be even better, if that's an option.

Be aware and afraid of the security implications, of exposing your NAS to the open internet

Yeah, I know thanks. It's only temporary and via a VPN. 🙂👍

Hi dolbyman,

Link created and shared via the application linked in the OP. A single password protected folder, my NAS is connected to web via VPN. Link only valid for a day.

All I need to do is share a few GB to an individual. My first plan was to use a 2 way sync via HBS3, to a Gdrive folder my colleague had shared with me. This didn't work as HBS couldn't see the shared folder as a target.

If the method I'm currently using is unsafe, I'd welcome any alternatives you can suggest.

It does not matter if the link is only valid for the day or only to one individual, the system that provides access to the files is insecure.

Where does the VPN connection come into play ? Because if you share these links you NAS is directly exposed.. and not only available via VPN.

Public file sharing should be done via a file hoster doropbox/onedrive/etc. You can even do a sync from NAS to File hoster with Hybridmount
https://www.qnap.com/en/software/hybridmount

Another alternative would be to setup a VPN account (done on router or dedicated appliance) for the individual to access your NAS from WAN.

Thanks, I'll look at those options. Any ideas on the original question?

If you want that feature, request it with QNAP. They do not come here, so you need to open a ticket.
