Win10 VM dont work anymore

Post by vampyren »

Hi,
I'm badly in need for some help. Please if you have any tips i greatly appreciate it.
Problem:
Then issue i have is the VirtIO driver. On the new installation it wont install it for the Hard-Disc (the main image where i installed windows) . I have
followed this guide several times before and it has worked flawlessly but now the driver for the disc wont work for my main disk.
For the extra disk (as shown in video @12:30) it does install but when i change from IDE to VirtIO for main disk i cant boot anymore since the drivers has not been installed for my main disk.
Sometimes i does continue if i change it back and forth from IDE to virtio but i end up in a BSOD as shown in the attachment.

The VM in question is Windows 10 64bit (latest built H2_v2) , 2 core + 4GB memory + 150GB disk. Already changed the network to VirtIO.
I use the latest VertIO version (virtio-win-0.1.190.iso)

Any idea what it could be?

I did something like this:

Boot with IDE setup as main disk

Add 2nd hard drive setup as Virtio

Install virtio drivers

Switch main drive to Virtio

Edit - looks like you tried this..

I spun up a Win10 VM just now, on my TS-453Mini with VirtualStation 3.5.56 running in QTS 4.5.2.1630 and it runs - but as slow as a turtle!! I assigned it 2 cores and 4Gb RAM and 256GB HDD.
In my opinion, a Windows VM this slow, is completely useless for any purpose!

Then I tried a Ubuntu 20.10 image, and it's somewhat more responsive, but still completely useless for any real-life purpose.

Is this QNAP VM solution usable at all ?

@peelos yes sadly i tried it already. Will try a older version of driver, this has worked everytime before ....

@oyvindo: It works pretty good here. Not a gaming spec but for running downloads + server and stuff it has worked for years for me. Depends on your need really.
I do have a better CPU though....

By the way has anyone made it work with UEFI?
It goes to the shell for me as image shows. I can use legacy but thought maybe UEFI should be possible too?

If you have followed the directions from QNAP to the letter:

https://www.qnap.com/en-uk/how-to/tutor ... on-station

then I suggest you raise a Ticket with QNAP to investigate the problem.

However, the same Ubuntu image runs like a rabbit in Docker on the same NAS (Container Station). Beats me why anyone would chose VM over Docker (But I never tried Windows in Docker. Probably doesn't work at all?)

@Toxic17: pretty hard to follow a guide where its extremly outdated and options, menus and allot does not exist. Thanks anyway.

So i re-installed windows again just to be sure and also downloaded one earlier version earlier: virtio-win-0.1.189.iso
Followed the video guide and it worked exactly as it used to. Maybe it was the latest drivers that have some issue. Hopefully this helps someone.
