VMs - how to get audio?

Post by sleepy_panda »

I have a TVS-672XT and setup some vms (Debian 10, Ubuntu 20.04, Windows 10) on it. I access the vms from laptops on the LAN with browsers (Firefox, Chrome) by logging into the NAS then clicking on the console button in Virtualization Stations - which loads the browser.

The sound is being played (see screenshot) - though I suppose locally on the NAS, and I’ve enabled audio in setting (see screenshot). But assume that just means that audio from the vm can be played locally on the NAS.

How can I configure things so that I can hear sound on my laptop(s)? Ideally without requiring bluetooth / HDMI / direct cabling to the NAS - if possible.

Firmware: Version 5.0.0.1850
Seagate Iron Wolf drives (raid 5)
Samsung 970 EVO Plus NVMe™ M.2 SSD (raid 1) [for system + vms]

I don't think VNC supports sound..so unless you run a win10 VM with RDP instead of VNC ...you will not get sound)

Yeah it seems to be somthing I'm discovering but still learning.

Does that mean that I can't use a laptop running Linux to access a VM running Windows 10 on my NAS to play PC games (with sound) unless I project the sound out off the NAS via hard wiring / bluetooth? Was wondering how the peps on here who upgraded their TVS-x72x with i7 /i9s use their NAS as gaming servers.

Unless it is a slow moving point and click game .I dont think you can "game" on a virtual machine at all (not via remote connection)

That protocol is not made for it...actually very few are (stadia/geforcenow/etc)
